摘要:
The paper describes the considerations which led to the development of an omni-directional aerial system for the frequency range 225–400 Mc/s, suitable for installation in H.M. ships for use with either transmitting or receiving radiocommunication equipment. Results of measurements on the performance of the aerial system, both as regards terminal-impedance variations and radiation characteristics, are given.

摘要:
The paper describes the design, construction and service performance of the Sutton Coldfield television station built by the British Broad-casting Corporation as a first step in the extension of its television service to the provinces. The relation of the operating channel of Sutton Coldfield to the overall frequency-allocation plan for the 41–68-Mc/s band used for television broadcasting in the United Kingdom and the reasons for adopting a vestigial-sideband characteristic for the vision transmission are briefly discussed. The complete vision and sound transmitting equipment is described and its performance characteristics are stated. The considerations governing the design of the aerial-mast system, the vision-and-sound-combining diplexer and the transmission lines are also discussed, and details are given of the construction used and the performance obtained.

摘要:
The transmitter described was designed and constructed for the B.B.C. and is the first post-war vision transmitter to be operated on regular broadcasting service in England. The description is general where the technique is well-established, but becomes more detailed concerning novel parts of the equipment.

摘要:
The paper is concerned with the design, construction and performance of the vestigial-sideband filter circuit installed at the Sutton Coldfield television station in 1949, operating on a vision carrier-frequency of 61.75 Mc/s and a sound carrier-frequency of 58.25 Mc/s.An outline of the specification of the filter is given as well as the reason for the choice of a complementary constant-resistance network filter of the Norton typs for this purpose. The basic design formulae relevant to the network chosen are given, with information on the inversion and replacement of lumped elements by coaxial lines. The practical circuit adopted is given, as well as the measured results showing the agreement between its performance and that of the idealized network. Finally, reference is made to the construction of the filter and to the ancillary components of the installation, comprising the absorber load, the standing-wave detector and the change-over switch.
