摘要:
This article draws attention to an action research methodology which was developed in operations research and is found in the business management literature. Soft systems methodology is outlined and illustrated with an example. In this case, it was applied to a problematic situation encountered in designing an intervention in a small organisation. The example provides a basis for considering its value for both practitioners and researchers in psychology.

摘要:
Bartholomew (1996) has taken issue with comments made in a previous article (Indermaur, 1994) regarding sentencing practice and offenders' perceptions. In this reply I reiterate my argument that sentencing could be considerably enhanced through the incorporation of information and perspectives from psychology and criminology. Much of the misunderstanding displayed in Bartholomew's comments can be attributed to the legal paradigm he adopts when looking at my study. This misunderstanding is seen as characteristic of the difficulty those aligned with current sentencing practice have in opening up to new perspectives. A number of studies illustrating the disarray in criminal procedure and the subjectivity of sentencing are referred to in an attempt to point out the limitations of the status quo.

摘要:
Davidson (1995) proposed a multiaxial model of cognitive assessment that could be used to assess indigenous Australians. In this comment, I do not question whether Davidson's model might be an effective way of gaining important information about a person's cognitive functioning, but I do question the appropriateness and the necessity of developing an assessment model specifically for indigenous Australians. I argue that such a racially specific approach to assessment is based on inappropriate racial stereotyping, a confounding of cultural (categorical) variables with individual differences (continuous) variables, and a misrepresentation of evidence on cultural bias in cognitive abilities tests. In the context of a multicultural society, it is essential to recognise that psychological inferences about an individual must be based on an assessment process that is designed to gain knowledge of the individual as an individual.

摘要:
Dyck (1996) has erred in his criticism of Davidson's (1995) proposal for a multiaxial model of indigenous cognitive assessment. His account of the literature offered in support of his viewpoint does not correspond with those authors' accounts. He misinterprets culturocentrism as racism and misunderstands the concept of culture. In attempting to separate the individual client from his or her cultural context he pursues a concept of “individual as an individual” that is unattainable, and an approach to cognitive abilities testing that is ethically questiona

摘要:
This comment addresses specific issues concerning neuropsychological practice in Australia that have been raised by Bowden (1995) in an earlier edition of theAustralian Psychologist, Specifically, Bowden argues that hypothesis testing as currently practiced by Australian neuropsychologists is professionally self‐defeating and scientifically flawed. In this comment, these matters are addressed. It is argued that, in contradistinction to Bowden's first assertion, current assessment procedures represent a flexible, professionally responsible approach that meets the joint demands of maximising patient care and facilitating interdisciplinary communication. With regard to the scientific merit of this approach, it is argued that the absence of rigour in neuropsychological practice suggested by Bowden is no more true of neuropsychology than of any other scientific endeavour. Clinical neuropsychology is guided by many pragmatic requirements common to most psychological research as well as additional constraints peculiar to the area. Good neuropsychological practice is sensitive to these constraints and yet practical in dealing with the
