This paper considers the past and current work of the Course Development and Accreditation Committee of APS in developing guidelines for the accreditation of undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology in Australia. It spells out the Society's assumptions about what skills and knowledge psychology graduates should have and why, and reports on a small survey of CDAC members' views. The case is argued for changes in the content and focus of psychology courses to meet changing needs and to balance the interests of the individual, employers, the science, and die profession.

The concept of public psychology has been mooted for some time as a vehicle by which psychologists may involve themselves in creating or managing social change. Nevertheless there has been disappointment expressed by several authors that the discipline has been ineffective in dealing with matters of public policy. This paper suggests that Australian psychology can benefit by studying the philosophical, ethical and professional role issues which have been evident in the development of other professions involved in public policy. Comparisons of the history and activities of the planning profession and psychology are made by highlighting some philosophical and professional issues. It is suggested that there is a case for greater involvement by psychologists in policy formulation or public psychology. Nevertheless it is concluded that the development of public psychology has been limited by the tendency of psychologists to rely too much on our positivistic methodological background. Opportunities do exist in the study of, and involvement in the dynamics of, the planning process itself. These dynamics include both the behaviour and ethical judgements of the psychologist and planner during policy formulation and an assessment of the criteria against which the community will determine issues such as equity and ethics. Some specific avenues of action and research are suggested in this context.

Clinical psychologists are frequently involved in training other health professionals in empirically validated therapeutic interventions (e.g., Cognitive‐behaviour therapies) which by tradition have been the domain of clinical psychologists. It is argued that to maintain treatment standards and the pre‐eminence of clinical psychologists in cognitive‐behaviour therapy, Clinical psychologists need to organise clinical psychology (and allied health professionals) by a system of accreditation. The proposal of accreditation is then extended to provide a way in which it could be integrated with the scientist‐practitioner model in order to motivate further professional development of clinical psychologists. The study investigated the experiences and perceptions of university students of both sexes who were older than usual, in order to explore possible influences upon female educational participation during early adulthood. A population of university students aged 23–25 years was surveyed using a postal questionnaire (N= 568), and then a random sample (N= 111; mean age 24.1 years) of respondents was interviewed. The women did not differ from the men in study satisfaction or the reported supportiveness of teachers and fellow students, but were more likely than men students to report that the sex of their teachers was important to them; their reasons are described. Women students were as committed to study as the men and received similar amounts of encouragement to study from significant others. Thus there was little evidence for lower female participation in tertiary study in early adulthood being due to women's perceptions of the university environment, and alternative lines of research are suggeste
