There is a powerful body of theory and literature in the social and behavioral sciences that argues our organized communities evolve in ways well out of our control as humans and that we both individually and collectively have little capacity to actually create systems according to our blueprints. If this is correct, it could help explain why we seem so unable to generate the type of psychological sense of community we describe as essential for healthy contemporary living. In this paper I argue we need a whole other way of thinking about the role we might play as co‐actors in the evolutionary processes of human systems, a role community psychology has described as participant‐conceptualization. I focus on the fact that in human systems, the meanings, both individual and shared, that we attach to experience are all important. This paper discusses how meaning is generated, with a primary emphasis on the role of framing and argues that only as we develop capacities in our organized systems to “self‐reflect” will we become meaningful co‐participants in their various evolutio

Australian norms are presented for a Canadian multidimensional version of Rotter's (1966) internal‐external locus of control scale. Responses of 534 students from Tasmania and Queensland were factor analysed to reveal the same three dimensions as found in North‐American samples. The results explained a greater percentage of variance than Australian studies which used the original instrument. It was suggested that the Canadian measure is superior to Rotter's scale and that its utilization in the Australian context is justified. Comparisons between Australian and Canadian findings revealed several features of interest as did within sample comparisons. Although terrorism is not a novel phenomenon there are valid reasons for supposing that current terrorist operations pose a greater potential threat to liberal democracies than their historical forebears did. However, while many of the reasons for this change in terrorist potential are grounded in physical technological innovation and its consequences, the solutions, either long‐term or crisis oriented, are inescapably rooted in behavioural considerations.Current anti‐terrorist measures tend to rely excessively on physical technological solutions and are therefore unable to provide useful answers to many of the important questions surrounding terrorism. Since we are dealing with human behaviour it is vital that we assess the contribution that can be made by psychology to the resolution of the problems posed by terrorism. The research findings and theoretical frameworks of leading proponents of social action and job design approaches to organizational behaviour are critically examined. It is suggested that despite apparent methodological, ontological, and epistemological differences, a theoretical synthesis of these approaches is possible and results in a more comprehensive and robust model of behaviour at work: one which generates more precise predictions and thus opens itself to close scientific and practical scrutiny. The major implication of the proposed model is that any theory which presupposes generic higher‐level human needs in work is mistaken, and that values, particularly instrumental ones, play an important though as yet not clearly specified part in determining individual behaviour in organization

摘要:
This paper deals with the issue of registration for academics who teach and do research in psychology departments. The consequences of registration for all psychologists are examined in relation to the diverse activities of academic and applied professional psychologists. It is argued that registration for academics has the potential for infringing on academic freedom, and that the medical model for the registration of psychologists is in some ways a misleading one. The purposes of registration are discussed with a view to the registration of professional practitioner psychologists in different specialities.

摘要:
It is submitted that the Siegal and Humphrey's case for the exemption of academics from registration is too narrowly based. The issue of academic freedom is the only argument advanced which, in the writer's opinion, might give cause for concern. It is suggested that such concern may be alleviated by a simple statutory provision. Otherwise it is argued that psychologists, whether academic or applied, are all part of an indivisible work force and all should, in the public interest, contribute to the statutory regulation of their discipline.

This paper examines a number of conceptual problems underlying attempts to initiate classroom programmes designed to teach the social skills of friendship to children in need. Current methods used to identify those children considered to be in need, to select appropriate behaviours to be taught, and to initiate effective training procedures are examined. It suggests ways and means of increasing the effectiveness of classroom social skills training programmes.

This study tested the hypothesis that measured vocational interests and self‐estimates of these reflect a common domain of psychometric behaviour. Previous attempts to relate interest inventory results to self‐estimates by product‐moment and rank correlation methods have generally yielded low lo moderate coefficients. This paper presents the first application of multivariate analysis of regression, variance and covariance to this problem. Self‐estimates of Kuder interests for 218 counselling clients were significantly related (p<.001) to their scores or percentiles on the Kuder Preference Record–Vocational. Self‐estimated interest varied significantly with sex (p<.001) but not with age or intelligence. The relevance of these results to the assessment of vocational interests in guidance and counselling
