摘要:
A questionnaire was distributed to rehabilitation staff in Western Australia to determine: (a) the extent to which psychological services were congruent with staff expectations of what the services should offer, and (b) areas of need not currently being met by the psychological services. The results were highly similar to Australian and American findings. In Australia psychologists are viewed as members of the rehabilitation team, but their activities are perceived as those concerned with the traditional areas in rehabilitation. Although there were areas of need not currently being met, insufficient psychology staff prevented these services being offered, with the result that these activities were taken over by other professionals.

摘要:
Although the process of compromise is crucial to career decision making, it has received little attention. This paper reports an attempt to explore people's attitudes and beliefs about how they would behave if they were forced to make career compromises. Specifically, subjects were asked to indicate what they would do if they were faced with a number of hypothetical career compromise situations where there were limited alternatives. Each alternative represented a different strategy and was varied according to the dimensions outlined in Gottfredson's (1981) circumscription/compromise theory of occupational aspirations. The results are discussed in terms of the circumscription/compromise theory and the practice of vocational counselling. Typically, subjects opted to sacrifice prestige level and maintain vocational interests and occupational sex type. This finding did not confirm Gottfredson's theory, nor was it consistent with previous research concerning how individuals state they would behave if faced with a career compromise situation.

摘要:
A sample of 722 articles from eight psychology journals available in Melbourne and judged to be of value to psychologists in the field was evaluated by 37 fourth‐year students in a counselling psychology course. The journals evaluated were chosen by six psychologists on the basis of usefulness and readability from a more extensive list of journals. Student ratings showed one journal to be the most relevant and useful to the

摘要:
The issues of overpopulation, pollution, and the prospect of nuclear war have all been discussed as environmental crises with doomsday ramifications. Braithwaite and Law (1977) developed a three‐faceted 24‐item doomsday issues questionnaire. The present study is a replication of this earlier study and is designed to investigate the underlying structure of the doomsday belief statements along the three theoretical facets. A total of 168 introduction to psychology students were administered the doomsday issues questionnaire and a liberalism‐conservatism ale as a marker variable. The five components retained were rotated using the Harris‐Kaiser independent cluster oblique solution. The analyses revealed two general components of doomsday consciousness. Component 1 was a general component primarily concerned with the ineffectiveness of actions taken by individuals and humanity in general. Component 2 also was a general component in terms of both personal and societal commitment to action. Component 3 defined a nuclear war component referencing societal concerns. Component 4 defined an overpopulation component concerning the effectiveness of personal actions with a high liberalism‐conservatism loading. Component 5 defined a general pollution‐overpopulatio

摘要:
While ostensibly investigating telepathically sent messages, the present experiment examined subjects' preferred responses, i.e. population stereotypes. Undergraduate students (N= 351) were asked a series of questions such as: “I am thinking of a number from 1 to 10. Write down the first number that comes to mind.” Throughout the series the experimenter thought of, or “sent”, non‐stereotyped answers in order to test for the effects of ESP. While there was no evidence to support the presence of ESP, the expectation that some responses, population stereotypes, would occur with frequencies greater than chance was

摘要:
Anxiety reduction techniques are amongst the most commonly used clinical procedures. This paper outlines the limitations of the most frequently used forms and argues for the development and evaluation of better coping skills training programmes. The development of a new coping skills training procedure entitled In‐Situ Isometric Relaxation Training is discussed, together with a preliminary study evaluating it against cue‐controlled relaxation in the reduction of general and situationally specific anxiety. Using a multiple baseline matched pairs analysis, isometric relaxation was found to be significantly more effective in the reduction of situationally induced anxiety. Details of the technique are given and applications outli

摘要:
Aerobic exercise (regular, vigorous, physical activity) has a range of established and putative health, psychological, and social benefits. Exercise at lower levels of intensity and frequency may also be beneficial. However, research evidence indicates that exercise patterns are poorly maintained. This paper considers stages of behaviour change relevant to exercise, evidence concerning the factors which influence exercise adoption and maintenance, psychological theories concerning behaviour change and maintenance, and these theories' actual and potential applications to exercise promotion. There remain a number of issues for investigation, at the levels of theory and basic research, applications in community settings, development of self‐instructional and minimal‐intervention programmes, development of public campaigns, and governmental policy developm

摘要:
The purpose of this research was to evaluate a new measuring instrument, the Causal Dimension Scale (CDS). Eighty‐nine New Zealand university students were asked to state in their own words the cause(s) of their previous year's tertiary grades and then to complete the CDS which sought their perceptions of the underlying cause(s) in terms of Weiner's (1979) dimensions: namely, locus of causality, stability, and controllability. It was found that the internal consistency coefficient o found for the control scale was rather low but the factor structure obtained generally supported the validity of the CDS. Fourteen “judges” were in fairly close agreement both with each other and with the subjects as to the placement of the first 32 subjects' causes on two of Weiner's three dimensions. It was concluded that while there is a need for an instrument such as the CDS, it does not seem to be wholly satisfactory at the m
