The history of the emergence of the field of environmental psychology is reviewed and examined. The nature of the new perspectives offered by the field are contrasted with more traditional psychological orientations. Basic assumptions of the environmental psychologist are discussed along with identification of particular topics in which one might work in the Australian context. Discussion of some of the probable directions for development of the field in Australia conclude the paper.

Theoretical relations between anxiety and curiosity have been suggested, and analogies have been drawn between the state‐trait formulation in anxiety theory and research and a similar formulation in curiosity. Individual differences in the potential for curiosity experiences suggest a trait (C‐Trait) formulation; while individual differences in curiosity experiences themselves (C‐State) suggest a state formulation. Three studies reporting psychometric aspects of the Melbourne Curiosity Inventory concern descriptive statistical characteristics of the C‐Trait and C‐State scales, and the validity of the state‐trait distinction for curiosity research. Rotter's internal/external control scale (I/E) was administered to a representative sample of 1473 households in metropolitan Adelaide. Within each household all persons 14 years old and over completed the scale. Means, norms and standard deviations were presented for the total sample as well as sub‐samples of employees, students, housewives, unemployed and retirees. Tables showing the variation of I/E scores with age, education, nationality and occupation were also presented. It was found that there were significant variations in mean I/E scores with age, education, occupation and sex. Factor analysis of the scale indicated that the scale is not uni‐dimensional, and the factors accounted for only a small proportion of the total variance, i.e., the item variances are largely unique. Using the total sample, two main factors were obtained which appeared similar to the Political Control and General Control factors obtained in some North American studies. The interpretation of the factors obtained is difficult because of variations in item content and format. Interest in the developing discipline of neuropsychology has increased to a point where needs for experts in both its research and clinical aspects are recognised, the roles of neuropsychologists are matters for discussion in several parts of the world and concerns are being expressed about standards for membership of the discipline and for its responsibilities to society generally. The present paper is an attempt to put these and related matters into perspective for the 1980's. As they are developing, roles for neuropsychologists cover the broad range from the generation of new knowledge and skills through basic and applied research to the use of knowledge and skills in the clinical setting. Although the latter now tends to emphasize diagnosis, there are opportunities for further extension into patient management, rehabilitation and the monitoring of trends in patient illness and recovery. There are a few examples of the role neuropsychologists may play as “expert witnesses” in cases involving determinations of legal responsibility for neurobehavioural deficits. The paper analyzes the age distribution, academic qualifications, teaching interests, and research specializations of psychologists holding appointments in Australian universities. Psychology Departments will face many problems over (he next 20 years following the abrupt end to expansion within the university system after two decades of rapid growth. In particular, the marked shift that will occur in the age distribution of psychologists in Australian universities will affect the career paths of recent and future graduates, and may limit innovation as well as lead to problems of obsolescence. Consideration is given to organizational changes that might prevent some of the problems that seem certain to result from the recent transition from rapid growth to steady state within universities.

Evidence on three issues relating to the use of ability tests with minority group children is briefly discussed. The issues are: Is there clear evidence that ability tests are biased against minority group children? Should migrant children be tested in their first language, or in English? and do tests cause a disproportionately large number of minority group children to be placed in special schools?

Feather (1979) has pointed out the need for a measure of values applied to the work situation. This article outlines the procedures involved in the construction of such a scale. Further, it summarises the results of some of the major statistical analyses undertaken in the development of the Work Aspect Preference Scale (WAPS). An initial version of the WAPS containing 178 items was analysed by a technique recently suggested by Berven and Hubert (1977) of using factor analysis and cluster analysis as complementary multivariate techniques. Principal components analysis with a varimax rotation was repeatedly applied to samples of items to approximate simple structure. Cluster analysis confirmed the 12 factor solution. Factors were designated Security, Self Development, Altruism, Life Style, Physical Activity, Detachment, Independence, Prestige, Management, Co‐Workers, Creativity and Money. Item‐total correlational analysis revealed quite homogeneous subscales while a MANOVA indicated that all 12 factor scores from the highest loading 3 items significantly discriminated occupational choice categories. A second version of the WAPS, comprised of 57 items, provided very strong confirmation of the previous results with the addition of an extra hypothesised dimensionSurroundingswhich had been inadequately represented in the earlier version. Again cluster analysis confirmed the factor structure. Item‐total correlations for each factor confirmed the homogeneity of all 13 subscales and a MANOVA indicated that all three‐item subscales butPrestige, significantly discriminated students' occupational choices. A third version of the WAPS was developed with the addition of an extra item per subscale in order to investigate whether four items provide more valid and reliable assessment than three. This study has two principal aims: firstly, to present data providing support for the validity of the Work Aspect Preference Scale (WAPS) and secondly, to provide data from Australian students relevant to the interest‐value distinction. A sample of 107 senior N.S.W. high school students were given the Kuder Preference Record — Vocational Form CH and the second version of the Work Aspect Preference Scale. Analysis revealed very few significant correlations between KPR and WAPS sub‐scales. The only correlations of importance were .48 for Social Service (KPR) and Altruism (WAPS); and — .38 for Social Service (KPR) and Money (WAPS). Substantial numbers of significant subscale intercorrelations within each test were found. Results are also reported for two samples of senior N.S.W. high school students for two related versions of the WAPS which indicated that the inventory's subscales significantly discriminated individuals' occupational preferences.
