摘要:
Although supply‐demand relationships for psychology graduates in Australia have been poorly documented, several trends can be identified. The output from tertiary institutions has expanded at a time when the traditional employers of psychologists are recruiting on a reduced scale. Pass graduates in psychology seeking immediate employment face strong competition for generalist positions from graduates in other disciplines. Four years of training is no longer a sufficient qualification for employment as a psychologist, possibly due to the impact of coursework Masters programmes. Doctoral graduates have markedly reduced prospects of employment in universities and other tertiary institutions. As well as emphasizing the need for more detailed and informative statistics, the present paper questions whether universities and advanced colleges have responsibilities in relation to the supply, training, and employment of psychologist

摘要:
The undergraduate statistics course can be a difficult hurdle for many Psychology students, particularly those who are anxious about the course. Undergraduate statistics students were divided into high‐anxious and low‐anxious groups by means of a questionnaire. Half the high‐anxious students received a do‐it‐yourself desensitization program used at home with a tape player. It included training in deep‐muscle relaxation and working through a hierarchy of fear situations related to the statistics course. Initial anxiety dropped for both anxious groups, but more so for the treated students. Performance on the exams also showed significance or borderline significance for the treated subjects. Multi‐variate analysis revealed associations between treatment, lowered end of year anxiety and an increase in statistics knowledge. In the overview, keeping in mind the small N's involved in this study (13 exp, 12 cont), we feel that this approach to statistics anxiety has promise, requiring minimal instructor time and providing potential benefits for worried undergraduate Psyc

摘要:
Items from the Rosenberg Self‐Esteem scale, a Semantic Differential scale of self‐concept ratings, and the Spielberger A‐trait scale were analysed using principal factoring with iteration and VARIMAX rotation. Data for the factor analysis were provided by 88 subjects of whom 48 were psychology students and the remaining 40 were non‐students matched for sex and age to the student group. Three interpretable factors were derived: Personal‐Self Evaluation, Social‐Self Evaluation, and Confidence. Reliability of the factor structure was assessed using data provided by 34 of the non‐student subjects. Test‐retest correlations for all three factors were statistically significant. The factor structure was discussed, and implications drawn concerning the use of the

摘要:
This paper examines the role of the psychologist in rehabilitation settings. The results are reported of a survey of III health professionals employed in Victorian rehabilitation settings. Information was collected concerning the perceived appropriateness of psychologists taking primary responsibility for twenty key rehabilitation activities as well as data concerning which professional group(s) were actually responsible for performing these activities in the respondents' work places. In addition, projections were elicited for staffing requirements and involvement in the future provision of psychological services over a five‐year period. The major findings of the survey were: (1) Psychologists were perceived by other rehabilitation professionals as legitimate members of the rehabilitation team; (2) Most respondents predicted an increase in the requirement for and involvement of staff in providing psychological services; (3) Despite the positive tenor of these attitudes, many services of a psychological nature are currently provided by other health professionals, notably doctors and occupational therapists; and (4) The traditional areas of psychologist' involvement in rehabilitation, namely I.Q. and personality assessment, were viewed as the most appropriate activities for psychologists to undertake. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of these findings for Australian psychologist

摘要:
The analysis of the effects and causes of heroin abuse has received considerably publicity in both media and government circles. Very little has been written in Australian journals relating to heroin abuse. Therefore a number of theories are critically reviewed and a viewpoint expressed to serve as a pivot for the coordination of both individual treatment and social reforms.

摘要:
This paper notes the increasing involvement of applied behaviour analysis in crime prevention and crime control and observes some trends in this development. Issues raised are the type of problem behaviours targeted, the ethical implications of work in this area, and the extent to which studies accord with the strict model of applied behaviour analysis. It is argued that there has been little explicit analysis of ethical problems engendered by choosing particular goals for behaviour change and that most studies also do not adhere to the basic tenets of applied behaviour analysis. Three strategies potentially applicable to the modification of criminal behaviour are outlined and the contribution of applied behaviour analysis to each is assessed. It is argued that applied behaviour analysis has some way to go before it has a significant contribution to make to the individual modification of criminal behaviour. In addition to individual modification, it is also suggested that applied behaviour analysis has potential application to wider programs of social planning for crime prevention, but that here too application is being retarded by current conceptual limitations in applied behaviour analysis.
