A course is described which presented views, to fourth year students in psychology, on the contributions that the psychologist potentially can make to community health as practitioners working collaboratively with a range of other professions in the health care System. Drawing upon contributions from other disciplines a broad range of views were described and evaluated. Data were available from student evaluations of the course and these are presented to point to future developments which may occur and to give others in the field guidance to the choice and interpretation of topics in the teaching of psychologists for a role in community health.

A number of general considerations are presented for the more successful organisation of fieldwork with ethnic minority communities in Australia. Particular attention is given to adequate preparation, the need to recognise difficultes in subject‐experimenter communication, and the importance of relevant feedback to the minority community. The Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ) of Caine, Foulds and Hope (1967) was administered to 177 Australian women for comparison with Australian women who seek to escape a battering husband. The present sample scored as more hostile than the English standardization sample, but less hostile than the battered wives of the comparison sample on PH (paranoid hostility), G (guilt), and H (total hostility).Several significant correlations were found. It is argued that negative correlations between age and H, and between age and AH (urge to act out hostility), reflected social learning effects; a negative correlation between age and G was interpreted as demonstrating guilt reduction in adulthood as conflicts which peak in adolescence are resolved. Scores on CO (criticism of others), SC (self‐criticism), PH. G and H emerged as significantly higher in women of lower social class. Exposure to more aggressive models and to more frustrating situations are suggested explanations for these effect

Psychiatric teamwork imposes on team members a number of interpersonal stresses arising from differing professional orientations and personal needs. Industrial staff development programs have used small‐group techniques to reduce interstaff tension, and some similar work has been done with interdisciplinary health teams. Transition theory offers a new perspective for studying processes operating within the development of team cohesion. This study of three multi‐disciplinary psychiatric staff groups found that the progressive elucidation and incorporation of staff interpersonal feelings into ongoing clinic activities followed a typical three‐phase pattern characterised by denial, acknowledgement, and implementation. Analysis into sub‐phases revealed a common transitional event centering on feelings toward a distanced professional colleague (transitional object) coinciding with the move from a reactive to a proactive mode. Measures of self‐esteem and attribution for future success or failure at a forthcoming examination were obtained for 241 Filipino university students. Analysis of variance indicated that the high self‐esteem subjects were significantly more likely than the low self‐esteem subjects to perceive their possible success as due to internal causes and to attribute possible success more to internal causes than they did possible failure. Low self‐esteem subjects did not differ significantly in their attribution for success and failure. Rather than supporting either self‐enhancement or self‐consistency theory for the low self‐esteem group the data suggest that these subjects may fail to internalize success to the same degree as the high self‐esteem subjects.
