The present paper suggested four possible mechanisms that could be implemented to upgrade and maintain professionalism in Australian psychology: the introduction of an association based on the “college” system; the restructuring of tertiary training programs; the establishment of stringent registration and re‐registration processes; and the development of appropriate continuing education programs. It was argued that while these strategies could facilitate professionalism, they could, at the same time, potentially disadvantage the practice of psychology. Finally, it was suggested that these mechanisms could be activated most effectively within the framework of The Australian Psychological Society and that the membership of the Society provided the greatest potential influence for their implement

Two studies are described which relate job satisfaction to congruence in values, in one case to the degree to which own values match those attributed to the work (school) environment and in the other to the degree to which actual work values match desired work values. Both studies indicate the importance of the work itself as a basic determinant of job satisfaction and provide evidence for significant (but relatively low) correlations that support the congruence hypothesis. Discussion focusses upon the issues of choice of units and definition of discrepancy, the need to recognize the stratified nature of most organizations and the relationships between levels, the effects of differences in value systems both across and within cultures, and the question of the meaning of particular values for different individuals, groups, and cultures.

A 1/2% sample of metropolitan Adelaide households was selected using multi‐stage cluster sampling. Employed and unemployed workers were asked to complete a questionnaire which measured work values, patterns of home and leisure activity, locus of control (Rotter, 1966) and number of frequent health and stress symptoms. A 70% response rate was obtained for employed workers and the response rate for unemployed was 80%. Comparisons between the two groups were made using ‘t’ tests and discriminant function analysis. It was found that unemployed workers when compared to employed workers had significantly more physical health symptoms, lower work values (they desired less influence, interaction and pressure in their work), a higher external control orientation, and made more use of community helping agencies. Differences in reported stress and life satisfaction were not statistically significant. However, reported stress was positively correlated with time spent looking for work. Definite causal inferences cannot be made due to the survey design. Given the known behavioural correlates of Rotter's control scale, the results suggest job retraining schemes are not likely to lead to eventual work adjustment unless the retraining allows the unemployed to alter their general expectations about effort and work out

In four different samples of university students from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and The United States (totaln= 645), criteria of psychological adjustment based on 2 friends' judgments of 15 specific behaviour tendencies attained levels of interrater agreement (averagingr= .50) at least as high as those previously obtained for criterion ratings on a wide range of attitudes, motives, and behaviour dispositions. Composite criterion ratings correlated with self‐reported adjustment at levels (averagingr= .32) comparable to correlations previously obtained between self‐report and acquaintances' ratings of other behaviour dispositions. Behaviour items which correlated highest with the total rated adjustment score were those judged by psychiatrists and clinical psychologists to be most diagnostic of personal adjustm

Persons, under 40 years of age, who indicated, at the Busselton Population Survey, that they smoked 15 or more cigarettes per day, were invited to participate in a stop‐smoking programme involving rapid smoking. Fourteen persons (8 men and 6 women), all of whom met specified health criteria, completed the programme. All underwent seven rapid smoking sessions which were carried out in groups of two to three subjects. Eight subjects were instructed to remain abstinent between sessions while six were permitted to smoke but instructed to do so rapidly. The instructions to refrain from smoking between sessions produced a significantly greater number of subjects being abstinent at the end of treatment and 1 month following the programme. The difference between the groups was no longer significant at 3 months. Overall, only three subjects, all from the group told to abstain between sessions, were not smoking 3 months after treatment. The remaining subjects were smoking, on average, 58.3% of their base‐rate daily consumption at the 3 month follow
