摘要:
Intercorrelations among and reliabilities of the subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale (R.P.A.H. version) are reported as well as the factor structure of the Scale and the efficiency of the Scale in identifying subjects with putative memory disorder.

摘要:
A technique is described which attempts to measure the responses of children in hypothetical stealing dilemmas. A technique embodying two forms, a so‐called “did do” version and a “should do” version, was constructed. The “did do” version was an attempt to represent the child in an “actual” though hypothetical stealing dilemma and through the use of the first person pronoun “I”, contrast this with a situation in which the child could respond in terms of how he or she thought he or she should. A series of highly significant differences within the groups on the “did do” and “should do” versions was noted, together with significant differences between the “delinquent” and “normal” populations. It was argued that such differences indicated that the procedure had good valid

摘要:
In a series of articles inEducation, the journal of the N.S.W. Teachers' Federation, from March to July 1983, Poulos, Junor and Andreoni severely criticized the use of group verbal general ability tests by the N.S.W. Department of Education. Their criticisms were manifold. Poulos in particular objects to “streaming” or ability grouping. He and Junor condemn general ability tests because they were so often sponsored in the U.S.A. in the second, third and fourth decades of this century by hereditarians and racists and were thought by such sponsors to measure an innate hereditary trait. They fail to mention contrary views propounded in the same period by other psychologists. They quite often follow Kamin in characterizing theirbětes noites. All three authors deny the short‐term predictive value in an educational setting of group ability tests and exaggerate the long‐term influence in N.S.W. of pssessed IQs established in Year 6. The ACER which produces the tests under attack is subjected to a vicious ideological assault. A not very convincing case is made for parents being asked to give permission for the testing of their children; a better case is made for the giving of the results of the testing to the parents (though this is a task for the counsellor rather than the teacher). Andreoni, though rather cavalier with the evidence she uses, probably has a case in urging that the administration of verbal general ability tests to “migrant” children after only 4 years in the local schools is too soon for a valid assessment of current intellectual functioning without taking many other factors

摘要:
Children are beginning to learn about computers at school, but more fundamental changes in their education will occur as computers are used across the whole curriculum. Although some psychologists are playing pioneering roles, the discipline of psychology seems largely unaware of the deep changes just starting in education. Yet psychology has the methodology and subject matter knowledge to make a central contribution. In addition, computers in regular educational use have great promise as research facilities, possibly allowing at last good control to be combined with realism in educational research, and giving new hope for a theory of human learning. Psychologists must be more active in the development of educational computing, and in the public policy debate that will determine the future of our children's education.

摘要:
The paper presents the objectives, rationale and description of an educational program which was designed to promote the development of relational empathy in student teachers. Evidence is presented to show why it is important for teachers to develop their ability to respond empathetically. Using Barrett‐Lennard's conceptualization, relational empathy is defined as an interactive process involving three phases: attentional, experiential and communication. The structures, processes and skills which are involved in the different phases of empathy are discussed and the experiences that promote their development are identified. The matching program activities are described. It is suggested that the program may be adapted to the training of students in other helping profession

摘要:
The present authors address the need for specialized professional training for psychologists who primarily work with the problems of childhood. It is argued that the area of child psychology is an amalgam of selected components of developmental, educational, and clinical psychology, and further that it is sufficiently discrete to warrant specialized training programs for child psychologists. Questions concerning the particular content of such training, and the level at which the training should take place, are raised. Various options regarding the answers to these questions are discussed, and a specific recommendation is presented.

摘要:
Structural change and its implications for unemployment raise questions about the meaning of work to individuals in our society. This paper examines the status of psychological research on this topic by reviewing four areas of research job satisfaction, effects of unemployment, adult development and the cultural significance of work and employment. The conclusions which can be drawn are limited by conceptual and methodological problems, but it seems that finding substitutes for opportunities for mastery in the work role is a central issue to be addressed in a transition to a low‐employment society. Some cautions about the values brought to bear on research in this area are sounde

摘要:
A scale designed to tap adherence to the Protestant work ethic ideology in Australia has been developed. The development of the Australian Work Ethic scale (AWE) was based on items selected on the basis of factor analysis and item‐total correlations. Validation of the scale found that it has convergent and concurrent validity. Specifically, it correlated highly with both the Mirels and Garrett (1971) Protestant work ethic scale and Blood's (1969) pro‐Protestant ethic scale. It was also found that people who strongly endorsed the work ethic ideology as measured on the AWE scale, tended to stress internal causal explanations for unemployment, and were less willing to provide assistance to the unemployed, findings which are in line with the work ethic ideology. The findings were discussed in terms of the continued efficacy of the work ethic ideology in Australia. Possible uses of this new measure in future research are sugges

摘要:
The study reported is an investigation of the correlates of individual differences in coping with unemployment in young Australians. One hundred and twenty‐six young people (66 males, 60 females) attending Commonwealth Youth Support Scheme (CUSS) centres in Melbourne were surveyed. Adjustment to unemployment was ad via self‐reported physical and mental health problems and life satisfaction. Also assessed were a range of factors hypothesized, on the basis of stress theory, to mediate adjustment to unemployment including: duration of unemployment, economic deprivation, social support, cognitive irrationality, work values and range of leisure activities. Regression analyses indicated that all criterion measures of adjustment were associated significantly with the predictor variables. It was concluded that stress theory provides a useful conceptual framework for analysing individual differences in the impact of unemploym
