摘要:
The discipline of clinical psychology has undergone exponential growth in the last two or three decades: The theoretical and empirical base has expanded; the narrow focus on assessment has been broadened to include treatment and prevention; and the area of application has widened from working within the field of psychiatry to cooperation with many other disciplines. These developments have rendered the current training programmes inadequate as they are too short in duration to impart to graduates the available knowledge and skills relevant to their future roles. Recent moves to encourage clinical students to complete PhDs serve a useful purpose for the profession but do not address the fundamental need for upgrading clinical training. Instead, it is proposed the profession should recognise its prodigious growth by conceptualising training and expertise at two levels; the generalist and specialist. The current masters courses cater for the former. New programmes need to be developed for the latter. Specifically, post‐masters programmes should be established which train individuals in the emerging specialities of clinical psychology such as adult behavioural disorders, child behavioural disorders, intellectual handicap, health psychology, community psychology, and forensic psychology. The programmes could be administered by universities or the profession, and should be organised on a day‐release basis whilst the participants are employed in the speciality area of the progra

摘要:
An accurate figure for the incidence of delicate wrist cutting in adult psychiatric patients is not available since the few studies that have been undertaken have not attempted to differentiate between the types of deliberate self harm. Ail that can be deduced from these and other studies like them is that between 1.6% and 3.4% of adult psychiatric patients engage in some type of deliberate self harm. Delicate wrist cutting, a term introduced by Pao (1969), is a low lethality form of non‐fatal deliberate self harm and, unlike suicide, the adult psychiatric patients who engage in delicate wrist cutting report that they have no intention of killing themselves. In this review, a conceptual framework is provided within which non‐fatal deliberate self harm, of which delicate wrist cutting is one type, can be understood and differentiated from other types of self‐destructive behaviour. A description of the actual act of delicate wrist cutting and the clinical features often reported throughout the literature as being associated with it is presented. A behavioural‐based treatment programme is outlined for dealing with the problem of delicate wrist cutting in adult psychiatric patients. The suggested treatment aims at breaking the chain of events frequently reported as being antecedent to the actual act of delicate wrist cutting. By intervening at crucial points within this chain, the aim is to prevent the patient from engaging in repeated episodes of delicate wrist

摘要:
This study investigated personality and other correlates of cigarette smoking among 193 adolescents. No support was found for the suggestion that more young females than males are engaged in smoking. Male smokers were observed to score high on a measure of psychoticism (P), although no relationship was found between smoking and any of the personality dimensions among females. Furthermore, male smokers had negative attitudes toward the “army”, while female smokers had negative attitudes toward “law”. Finally, only among females was an association found between respondents' smoking behaviour and that of siblings. These findings were interpreted in the light of theories of

摘要:
The present study examined six video cassette rental stores in Brisbane, Australia. Comparisons were made regarding volume of stock, methods of display, and clarity of the censorship classification system on the fronts of covers of videos that were displayed. In one of the stores, hirers' attitudes and the reasons for their borrowings were investigated directly for PG‐and M‐rated videos. Results suggest the existence of an inverse relationship between size of store and responsibility with respect to censorship rating display patterns. In addition, hirers seemed to be more influenced by the video covers as the ratings became more severe. Further, the rating appeared to take on less significance for M‐rated videos than those rated PG. Policy implications of the results are discussed in the context of the censorship issue in Aust

摘要:
Work is reported on the use of the Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) with young children who exhibit no expressive language. A psychogalvanometer was employed to detect areas of receptive language (Osgood's connotative meaning), to assess the acquisition of receptive language and to provide a base for developing initial language instructional programmes for individual children. Results indicate that use of the GSR can provide a valuable clinical tool for assessing and guiding instruction of expressive language of language‐delayed non‐verbal child

摘要:
Reliability and validity data are presented for the dental fear thermometer, an analogue scale of dental fear. Test‐retest reliability over approximately two months was 0.78. Correlations with the Corah, Gale, and Illig (1978) Dental Anxiety Scale and with estimates of dental fear made by dentists were 0.61 and 0.49 respectively. Therapy produced a significant reduction in the mean fear thermometer score for a group of dental phobics. Horizontal or vertical presentation of the thermometer had no significant effec

摘要:
Self‐ratings of six career interests ‐ Practical, Scientific, Artistic, Social, Business, and Clerical ‐ were obtained from 1,610 high‐school pupils. These self‐ratings correlated significantly with measured interests, and complied with the Campbell‐Fiske criteria for convergent and discriminant validity. The correlation of self‐reports with other psychological constructs such as intelligence and personality is reported for a sample of 541 subjects. Implications for the use of vocational interests in career guidance

摘要:
Four complementary studies explored the current status of the scientist‐practitioner model; the degree to which clinical psychologists engaged in research consumption, research activity, and publication; and attitudes to research and training. The results showed that the model still enjoys widespread support, but contrary to the model, most clinical psychologists do not engage in research let alone publish findings. They appear to monitor research findings but whether this influences their practice is debatable. Clinical psychologists report that they would like to do more research but perceive time pressures and lack of funding as the major obstacles. A number of recommendations for change were made, including the following: University clinical courses should shift the focus of their research training to methodologies which are more clinically relevant and more compatible “with clinical settings; employing agencies should give a higher priority to research; and more collaboration between psychologists in academic and applied settings should oc

摘要:
Contrary to the view held by many modern psychologists that philosophy is irrelevant for psychological research, philosophical considerations can significantly affect the ways in which psychological thinking is shaped. The influence of realism, as put forward by the Sydney University philosopher John Anderson, illustrates the relevance of philosophy. This paper first provides general, and necessarily subjective, impressions of some educational features of the Sydney Psychology Department during the tenure by W. O'Neil (1945‐1965) as Head and only Professor of Psychology. It is suggested that the department stressed the conflict of ideas as essential in the process of enquiry. Some autobiographical examples are then given to illustrate how Andersonian realism significantly affected both the conduct and the evaluation of experimental psychological research. The paper concludes by suggesting that autobiographical reflections can be useful in providing a starting point for a broader and more substantiated analysis of the ways in which philosophical thinking impacts on empirical researc
