AbstractAnalyses of flue gases from fossil fuel power plants for both concentrations of sulphur oxides and the distribution of stable sulphur isotopes therein have been made. Apparatus and procedures are described for isokinetically sampling flue gas and collecting adequate samples for mass spectrometry. Results of these measurements are tabulated and their significance discussed.

AbstractSolutions of ilmenite (FeTiO3) and a titaniferous slag, in fused Li2O. 2B2O3and Li2O. 4B2O3, yield on cooling compounds tentatively identified as LiFe2.5Ti3O9and Li2Fe3Ti2.5O9respectively. Both compounds are orthorhombic, and have the pseudobrookite structure.The ilmenite solutions yield, in addition, rutile (TiO2). The yield of rutile increases from about 1 to 24% (w/w) of the products, when the solvent is changed from Li2O. 2B2O3to Li2O. 4B2O3. Substitution of K2O. 4B2O3for the latter solvent decreases the yield of rutile toc. 10%. The yield of rutile is approximately in inverse proportion to the Lux—Flood basicity of the borate solven

AbstractAn autoclave with an externally generated steam supply and fitted with windows has been used to observe calcium silicate brick specimens with varying initial moisture contents during the autoclaving cycle. In particular, gains and losses in weight due to condensation and evaporation of water were recorded.Tests on the autoclaved specimens indicated that bulk density, compressive and transverse strength varied with initial water contents of the mix within the range 4 to 14%. AbstractMeasurement of the absorptive efficiency of ferric oxide is made by passing a measured volume of air containing a known low concentration ofH2Sthrough the sample at a known constant velocity, and measuring the residualH2Swhich has not been extracted. This last measurement is carried out by passing the air through a paper impregnated with silver nitrate, and measuring the optical transmission density of the stain formed. Concentrations are calculated from the sulphide stain densities and the volumes of air passed through the papers. The calibration technique forms the basis of a method of measurement of trace amounts ofH2Sin the atmosphere, and is unaffected by the presence ofSO2.

AbstractThe oxidation of thioglycollic acid (TGA) by bromate is an autocatalytic reaction which is further catalysed by the presence of soluble ferric iron. The reaction rate decreases at increasingpH but, in the presence of ferric iron, there is an optimumpH of about 9.0. When thepH is below 7.0 the reaction rate is again increased due to the liberation of free bromine.

AbstractA simple method is described for making infrared measurements on solids at temperatures up to the melting point of KBr by using a fine nichrome heating coil wound directly on to the KBr disc containing the sample either in suspension or sedimented on to the surface. The usefulness of the method is illustrated by intensity measurements of the hydroxyl stretching bands in kaolinite as a function of temperature, which are compared with results obtained by the more conventional quenching method.

AbstractStability constants for copper—ammine species absorbed on sulphonated polystyrene cation‐exchange resin have been estimated by the method of Bjerrum. The following values are obtained; logk1= 4.5, logk2= 3.7, logk3= 3.1, logk4= 2.5, logk5= 1.9. AbstractPulps with the same chemical characteristics were prepared by carrying out the pulping process either under atmospheric pressure or under high pressure. Atmospheric pressure pulping had a highly favourable effect on the strength properties of paper in contrast to high pressure pulping. The effects of the pith fraction, the stems and the leaves on the chemical composition and the physical strength characteristics were investigated.
