AbstractChlorinated hydrocarbons (CH2Cl2, CHCl3, CCl4, C2H2Cl2, C2HCl3and C2Cl4) are efficiently converted to HCl and CO2over Pt/γ‐Al2O3catalysts on which a hydrocarbon fuel is being oxidised catalytically at about 450°C: conversions generally exceed 95% if the catalyst contains 0.8% or more Pt. Conversions are almost independent of vapour pressure of chlorinated hydrocarbon, and are not strongly temperature dependent between 420 and 500 °C. AbstractA process for the preparation of disubstituted organomercurials was studied. The reaction is summarised by the following equation:\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ 2ArHgX\xrightarrow{{EDTA;NH_3 }}Ar_2 Hg $$\end{document}where Ar = aryl and × = different anions. Instead of ammonia and EDTA other amines and chelating agents were also used. Only those chelating agents that have virtually the same structural features as EDTA were found to have the same effect. AbstractLiterature data for natural solutions is compared and a wide spread of surface tension values is shown. A comparison of three techniques, capillary rise, drop weight and maximum bubble pressure failed to indicate that the technique alone was responsible. Repeating the determinations at pH 9.5 did indicate marked dependence on the technique employed. Wetting problems coupled with a pronounced time dependence of the surface tension were responsible. The bubble pressure method is shown to be the most suitable, being versatile enough to handle the dynamics. A comparison of critical micelle concentration (c.m.c.) data as a function of pH with the calculated solubility limit of dodecylamine as a function of pH revealed an interesting incompatibility; at pH greater than 9, the indicated c.m.c. was greater than the solubility limit.

AbstractBoth pure acetylene and mixtures of acetylene and ammonia have been passed continuously through a microwave discharge reactor. The reaction products from the gas mixtures were hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen and nitrogen. When the input reactant ratio (ammonia to acetylene) was below a critical value, the extent of reaction was negligible. When the critical ratio was exceeded, high conversions were obtained. When reaction did occur, the conversions of both reactants were linear functions of the power absorption in the discharge. The conversion of acetylene to hydrogen cyanide varied linearly with the input volumetric flow rate. Comparison of the present work with previous studies shows that hydrogen cyanide is not produced exclusively by the route\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \text{a}_\text{c} \text{ - 8}\text{.1 } \times \text{ 10}^{\text{ - 6}} \text{ }\sqrt {\text{C}_\text{h} } $$\end{document}when mixtures of benzene and ammonia react in a microwave discharge.

AbstractFive samples of Australian gypsum and one from Thailand were analysed chemically and subjected to comparable degrees of grinding and calcination. During hydration of the products considerable differences were found in the periods of induction and other kinetic parameters. Both differences in nucleation, and in the transport of calcium sulphate from the grains of hemihydrate to the growing crystals of dihydrate, seemed to contribute to the variations in reactivity. The variations did not seem to be related to the content of sodium sulphate, but a connection with that of chloride was indicated. The samples of gypsum varied in their susceptibility to transformation to orthorhombic calcium sulphate.

AbstractStarch and amylose utilisation byK. aerogenesunder chemostat conditions were studied as models of polymer degradation in the chemostat. The effects of growth rate on the process and upon cellular concentrations of α‐amylase and pullulanase were determined. The debranching enzyme (pullulanase) activity was greatest when the highly branched polymer (starch) limited growth. The pullulanase activity varied inversely with the dilution rate when starch limited growth but increased with dilution rate when nitrogen limited growth. Pullulanase seems to be the enzyme controlling growth rate. The polymer substrate affinities (Ksvalues) expressed on a molar basis were about the same as the values observed for monome

AbstractA kinetic model for batch growth of a methane‐utilising bacterium is presented, using data from previous experimental work on the specific rates of growth, respiration and methane consumption of the bacterium. A two‐substrate model with respect to methane and oxygen was employed to represent the specific rate of methane consumption. Employing the various coefficients assessed previously, the bacterial growth was simulated in relation to changing partial pressures and mass‐transfer coefficients for both gases. The simulated results are discussed in light of the experimental data published by other workers on both pure and mixed populations of methane‐utilising bacteria.
