摘要:
AbstractSolubilities of benzene and toluene in mixtures of nitric and sulphuric acids of various compositions have been measured and also distribution coefficients. Correlations are presented to allow distribution coefficients to be predicted in acid mixtures of compositions typically used for aromatic nitration in industry.

摘要:
AbstractThe thermal transpiration effect for krypton is investigated using a number of models previously suggested. Past workers have found that for small diameter tubes, the low pressure region may not be satisfactorily represented by the semi‐empirical Liang equation. The data obtained in this work show that using αHe= 160.3 (N–2m2) and βHe= 59.1 (1 —Rm)(N–1m), the Liang equation fits the whole pressure range with a value of the constant, Φg= 3.7. In this equationRm= (T1/T2)1/2and the values of the constants are applicable whenT1= 77.7 K andT2= 293.3 K. It is discussed how the temperature dependence of the constants may be a

摘要:
AbstractThe kinetics of V2O5‐catalysed vapour phase oxidation of ethyl alcohol were studied with the help of a differential fixed‐bed flow reactor. The partial pressures of alcohol, oxygen and water were varied in the ranges: 6–10 × 10–3atm, 1–10 % × 10–1atm, and 0–169 × 10–3atm respectively in the temperature range 228–264 °C. The rate equation:\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \text{a}_\text{c} \text{ - 8}\text{.1 } \times \text{ 10}^{\text{ - 6}} \text{ }\sqrt {\text{C}_\text{h} } $$\end{document}deduced by the assumptions of the steady‐state redox mechanism, was found to conform to the experimental results. The energies of activation for the partial reactions, namely reduction and oxidation of the catalyst, were found to be 18.9 and 11.8 kcal/mol. The influence of different products was

摘要:
AbstractLeaching of three commercially used asbestos (chrysotile, crocidolite and amosite) was carried out in water at 37 °C under both static and dynamic conditions. True equilibrium was not established in the maximum time allowed (2 months). After a certain time which varied from sample to sample, metal ions were released at a steady rate. The high pH recorded in the case of leaching of chrysotile and crocidolite (10 and 9 respectively) suggested the presence of some mineral impurities, later identified as brucite in chrysotile and ankerite in crocidolite. Since most chrysotiles are contaminated with some magnesium impurities which are impossible to remove without changing the chemical nature of chrysotile itself, it is virtually impossible to study the actual leaching kinetics of pure stoichiometric and natural chrysotile

摘要:
AbstractA mathematical model describing the kinetics of sugar utilisation and changes in active yeast concentration during batch fermentation of brewers' wort is presented. Consideration is first given to the problems of modelling multiple substrate systems in which microorganisms can utilise carbohydrates both simultaneously and sequentially. Ideas outlined in the introductory sections are then used to develop a model of the beer fermentation process, and it is shown how the model can be matched to experimental data.

摘要:
AbstractContinuous countercurrent fluidised bed ion exchange equipment has certain advantages over moving packed bed or fixed bed equipment. The treatment of high flow rate dilute waste streams containing particulate matter and the processing of uranium ore unfiltered pulps are considered in the application of fluidised bed systems. Methods of obtaining design data are outlined and techniques for calculating the performance of continuous counterflow systems are proposed for various situations.

摘要:
AbstractThe extraction of zinc, cadmium and mercury from chloride and sulphate media by solvating extractants, liquid anion and liquid cation exchangers has been reviewed both from the literature and by experiment. The results have been discussed in terms of both practical process possibilities and the use of slope analysis to identify the extracted species. These show that slope analysis cannot give positive unambiguous identification of extraction stoichiometry in systems in which the extracted metal species contains coordinating ligands from the aqueous phase. However, in the extraction of Zn and Cd from sulphate media by di(2‐ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (DEHPA) the extracted species is shown to be an MR2(HR)2monomer by slope analysis demonstrating its use in simple systems. In the case of amines and solvating reagents such as TBPcand TOPO zinc appears to be extracted from Cl–media as either ZnCl2or sometimes HZnCl3whereas Cd and Hg(II) appear to be always extracted as HCdCl3and HHgCl3species. The use of aqueous phase complexing by Cl–to improve the separation of Zn and Cd by extraction is clear. Some results are presented for the recovery of zinc from sulphate media by oximes and mercury from sulphuric acid media by amines and
