摘要:
An 18-month old Friesian heifer which had lost condition and had diarrhoea for several weeks was diagnosed by haematological and pathological examinations as having lymphocytic leukaemia. True lymphatic leukaemia has not previously been described in cattle and does not readily fit into presently accepted classifications of bovine leukosis.

摘要:
Caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAFV) was isolated from the carpal joint of an Anglo-Nubian yearling goat with chronic progressive pneumonia and subclinical carpal arthritis. Anti-CAEV antibody was detected in this goat and in nine of 69 goat sera tested from two herds.

摘要:
A caprine herpesvirus related to infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus but immunologically distinct from that virus was isolated from an outbreak of vulvovaginitis in a herd of Saanen goats. The morbidity rate was 52.5%, with 21 of 40 does showing clinical signs. The lesions healed rapidly with only two goats showing lesions two weeks after the disease was first detected. No effect on subsequent reproductive performance was observed. The mode of transmission of the virus was believed to be venereal.

摘要:
Superphosphate poisoning is typically a disease of pregnant and lactating ewes under nutritional stress. Poisoning has been observed only in the late winter and spring. Most episodes occurred when hungry sheep were forced to graze short pastures topdressed within one week prior to the onset of clinical signs. Fine weather which is favourable for the application of fertiliser also favours the occurrence of poisoning.

摘要:
Merino sheep vaccinated with either wholeBucteroides nodosusorganisms, a crude surface antigen preparation or highly purified pili (>99% homogeneity) in oil adjuvant, developed significant resistance to artificial footrot infection when compared with unvaccinated control sheep inoculated with saline-in-oil emulsion (Freund's incomplete adjuvant) alone. The pili-vaccinated sheep generally had higher K-agglutinating antibody titres than sheep vaccinated with wholeB. nodosus. These results confirmed the role ofB. nodosuspilus protein both as a protective antigen and the K-agglutinogen.

摘要:
Sir, — The isolation of caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) from the carpal joint of a yearling goat with chronic interstitial pneumonia is reported in this issue of the Journal.(3)We wish to report on the experimental infection of sheep and goats with this isolate of CAEV. Two 20-month-old Romney lambs (483, 485) and two 2-month-old feral goat kids (43, 45) were inoculated with CAEV suspension (104.0median tissue culture infective doses [TCID50ml]). Each animal was inoculated with 1.0 ml of virus suspension by each of the following routes: intravenous, intracerebral into the right cerebral hemisphere and intra-articularly into the right radio-carpal joint.(4)An additional control lamb (490) and goat kid (44) were inoculated in identical fashion with cell culture fluid from uninfected goat synovial membrane cells.

摘要:
Sir:- A project to investigate the efficacy of the complement fixation test (CFT) for the diagnosis ofBrucella ovisinfection in rams has recently been completed. The investigation was undertaken by field and laboratory staff of the Division of Animal Health and several practitioners. The results of CFT's done with 3 antigens by waim and cold fixation methods (WCFT and CCFT) were correlated with results of cultures done of semen from the same rams. It is our aim to publish a full report in this Journal at a later date. In view of the widespread interest in the subject some of the important findings are summarised below:• Semen and blood samples were collected from 541 rams in 40 flocks.• The type of antigen which has been used for a number of years in New Zealand was unsatisfactory. The CCFT using this antigen had a sensitivity of only 85% in 124 rams which gave positive semen cultures. These rams came from 16 infected flocks.• The CCFT using the best of the 3 antigens proved to be a remarkably reliable test. In the same group of infected animals mentioned above, 120 of the 124 infected rams had positive or suspicious CFT's. The sensitivity of the test was therefore 97%. The specificity was > 99% in 144 rams in 16 uninfected flocks. Only 1 suspicious titre was found in the uninfected group.• In 4 flocks in whichB. oviswas never isolated, 18 of 58 sera gave positive or suspicious reactions. Recognition of this type of 'problem flock' is therefore important. A history and clinical picture which does not agree with serological results should always be thoroughly investigated. Semen should be collected from an appropriate number of cases for bacteriological examination. It is suspected that at least some ‘problem flocks’ may contain unreported vaccinated animals. Further investigation of ‘problem flocks’ will be an aim of the Animal Health Division in the future.

摘要:
Sir:- Contact hyypersensitivity (CHS; syn: contact allergy, contact dermatitis, contact eczema) is induced when chemicals (haptens) capable of binding covalently to autologous proteins are applied to the skin.(1)The hapten-protein complexes formed in this way are immunogenic and elicit the immune response underlying CHS. CHS is a form of delayed hypersensitivity. Exposure of a primed animal to the sensitising hapten results in erythema and induration at the site of skin contact, the response being maxima1 after 24 hours.

摘要:
Sir:-I should like to record our results with a product quite new on the market which, after an initial problem with the wrong glue being supplied, has proved most successful in this practice. As an alternative to digital amputation in the severely lame cow we have found “Hoof Blocks”, which are purchased as a kit, to provide a very cheap, convenient and effective cure.
