摘要:
Serum collected at monthly intervals from groups of lambs on 4 farms in Hawkes Bay, was tested for antibody against parainfluenza virus type 3 (PI3) and the adenovirus (AV) WV 757/75. The lungs of fat lambs from these flocks were examined for the presence of pneumonia and pleurisy at slaughter. Maternal antibody against both viruses was detected in August. The titres decreased until all animals were susceptible to PI3at the January sampling and susceptible to the AV in January, February or March. The first new infections with PL, were detected in February or March and with the AV in March or April. Both infections spread through the flocks over a period of 3 to 6 months. In slaughtered lambs, the prevalence of pneumonia was low in November and December but rose to 20 to 30% in March and June after the virus infections had passed through the flocks. These data suggest that these viruses may have a role in the development of ovine pneumonia although no causal relationship was established.

摘要:
Examination of 481 faecal samples from North Island dogs revealed that 307 (63.8%) contained coccidia. The majority of infected samples contained a single coccidian but in total 4 valid coccidian parasites of dogs were identified. Two further coccidians, accidentally “parasitic” in dogs, were tentatively identified. The identities and prevalences of the valid coccidian parasites were —Isospora canis(4.0%),Isospora ohioensis(9.2%),Hammondia heydorni(2.7%),Sarcocystisspp. (58.8%); and of the accidental coccidian “parasites” —Isospora lacazei(2.1%),Eimeriaspp. (9.8%).

摘要:
Breeding and production data were collected from 20 town-supply dairy herds in the Manawatu/Horowhenua region. Calving interval, calving to first service interval, first service to conception interval, inter-service interval, calving rate to first service and services per cow calving were 384, 85, 11, 43 days, 51% and 1.7, respectively, for the pooled population of 12, 056 calvings. The mean milk yield was 3730 litres per cow and the mean lactation length 291 days. Age, herd, season within year, and year, had statistically significant effects on reproductive performance, although the amount of variation due to these variables was small. The younger cows (2-year-olds) were relatively poor performers. Reproductive performance was best during the spring. Days from calving to first service, and from first service to conception, were of similar importance in determining differences in calving interval. A high incidence (25%)of return intervals of more than 49 days was found between first and second service. It was concluded from the data that a programme for breeding each cow as she comes into oestrus 46–66 days post-partum is a simple and appropriate procedure for achieving a 365-day calving interval. Such a programme is more likely to be successful if continued attention is paid to both heat-detection procedures and the nutritional requirements of animals during rearing, late pregnancy and early lactation, and if routine pregnancy testing 6 to 8 weeks after service is used to recognise the problems of post-service anoestrus.

摘要:
A case of oesophageal obstruction in a dog was caused by an intraluminal, pedunculated thymoma. The tumour was surgically excised and, eventually, the dog made a full recovery. Two days after being discharged from hospital, the dog developed acute myositis involving the temporal muscles which responded, without untoward sequelae, to steroid therapy.

摘要:
Massey University veterinary students rated subjects in their curriculum more highly for interest and usefulness than for the way in which they were taught. There were few statistically significant differences between the scores given by different years or sexes, but there was a tendency for higher scores to be given to subjects during the years in which they were studied, and females usually gave slightly higher scores than males. Scores for interest and usefulness were highly correlated (r = .90). Subjects in the clinical area of the course were usually rated more highly than those in the pre-clinical years.
