The growth of a New Zealand strain ofM. ovipneumoniaein broth culture at 37°C was examined. In these conditions, the organism had a minimum division time of 1.7 hr and attained a maximum titre of about 2×109CFU/ml. Growth produced sufficient turbidity, particularly in shaking cultures, to allow this to be correlated with the viable count. The cultures died rapidly following the attainment of maximum titre.

Mice given sporidesmin in their drinking water for 10 days developed bilirubinaemia. Mice immunized with some 2-amino-5-chloro-3, 4-dimethoxy benzyl alcohol-bacteria complexes were apparently more resistant to the bilirubinaemic effect of sporidesmin than were unimmunized mice.

A method is described for measuring the pelvic dimensions of the ewe from one lateral and one ventro-dorsal radiograph. Estimates of the conjugate and transverse diameters of the pelvic inlet, and the distance separating the lateral ischial tuberosities, accurate to within 5% of post-mortem measurements, were obtained from 11 sheep by employing a large target-film distance and applying correction factors for each of the planes of interest. Estimates of the distance between the posterior promontories of the ischium agreed less well with post-mortem measurements, but this may be related to the difficulty in locating this point accurately at post mortem. The pelvic outlet was estimated poorly by radiographic pelvimetry (r = 0.68) and was considered to be of little value in predicting the size of the pelvic outlet at parturition.

Three groups of mature Romney ewes (⪖ 4 years of age), with different histories of lambing performance, were radiographed to obtain measurements of pelvic dimensions. The ewes in Group I had all been assisted to lamb at least once (group mean 2.3), whereas the ewes of Groups II and III had histories of freedom from dystocia. Group II ewes were selected from a commercial flock and the Group III ewes from a closed flock that had been unshepherded at lambing for approximately 40 years. Pelvic inlet area (conjugate diameter × transverse diameter) differed between groups such that Groups II and III had larger pelvic areas than Group I ewes (p<0.01). Size of the pelvic inlet in relation to birth weight of the lambs also differed between groups, and Group III ewes had the largest, and Group I ewes the smallest, relative pelvic inlet area.

Four pour-on formulations, Poron 20(R)(20% phosmet), Somonil(R)(8% methidathion), Ridlice(R)(50% chlorpyrifos) and Lypor20(R)(20% temephos), were tested for efficacy against long-nosed sucking lice (Linognathus vituli) of cattle.

A survey was carried out by means of questionnaires and correspondence on the distribution, feeding and breeding of feral cats in New Zealand. Altogether 950 specific sightings of feral cats were recorded and mapped: cats were recorded from almost all parts of the country in a wide range of habitats from sea-level to 1500 m. Eighty per cent of these sightings were 2 km or more from human habitation, 29% > 10 km. Evidence of breeding was recorded from all areas and categories of habitat. Cats were observed feeding on a wide range of animal remains; rabbits, opossums, sheep and birds were reported most commonly. Although they are probably an important source of sporozoan infections for domesticated animals, it is concluded that it would be neither practical nor justifiable to attempt to control feral cats on agricultural land.
