In the presence of an indicator antigen-antibody complex, the complement (C) activity in ewe and ram serum was reduced or abolished by addition of ewe serum that had been heated at 56°C for 10 minutes. Pre-incubation of heated ewe serum at 39°C for 30 minutes with the C source prior to addition of the indicator system or addition at the same time caused similar reductions in C activity. Results from the haemolytic, conglutinating and haemagglutinating activities studied indicate that the ewe serum inhibitor(s) reacts with activated classical or alternative activating pathway components and/or the third component of C (C3).

A comparison was made of the parasitological and production responses to the prophylactic (summer) and combined prophylactic and therapeutic (summer/autumn) administrations of the morantel intraruminal, sustained-release bolus (MSRB) with responses to conventional drenching in grazing dairy calves over an 8-month period. The MSRB was designed to release morantel tartrate at 150 mg/day for 90 days.

An eight-year-old Collie dog was treated for keratoconjunctivitis sica of both eyes. Initial medical treatment for five months was of little use. Bilateral parotid duct transfer was performed and subsequently the eyes have remained constantly moist, although pigmentation and scarring to both corneas restricts vision.

Two groups of adult Merino sheep, initially grazed on pasture, were dosed daily with zinc sulphate (1 mg Zn/kg LW) or zinc oxide (15 mg Zn/kg LW) for six and seven weeks, respectively. On the 18th day, both groups were transferred to indoor pens together with unmedicated control sheep, and five days later the feet of all animals were infected artificially with a virulent strain ofBacteroides nodosus. By the fourth week after challenge, 85% or more of the feet challenged had developed advanced footrot, and no significant differences in the incidence and severity of lesions between dosed and undosed groups were recorded. Plasma zinc concentrations, monitored throughout the experiment, remained at similar levels in sheep receiving the lower dose rate and in the controls. At the higher dose rate, plasma zinc levels increased till Day 23, but thereafter declined to values comparable to those of undosed animals. At post mortem, no evidence of zinc toxicosis was found, and only the kidneys of sheep receiving the higher dosage showed a significant accumulation of zinc compared with the controls.

Sir:— Brownlieet al.have shown that the bovine mammary gland provides a suitable environment for assessing the potential pathogenicity of bovine mycoplasmas and Ureaplasmas recovered from varied sites.(2)Mycoplasma dispar, which is considered important in the aetiology of calf pneumonia, has proved markedly pathogenic for the udder, six of seven respiratory tract isolates producing clinical mastitis when experimentally inoculated via the teat canal.(2) Despite this potential, there appear to be no reports of the recovery of this mycoplasma species from field cases of bovine mastitis. In this letter we describe such an episode.

Sir:— Steatitis with myonecrosis has been reported in donkey foals in the United Kingdom(7) and without myonecrosis in Australia.(8) This is the first report of steatitis and myonecrosis in donkeys in New Zealand although a similar condition has been found in thoroughbred foals.(5)(3)

Sir:— Since resistance to tuberculosis is a function of cell mediated immunity,(1) the susceptibility of Australian brush-tailed opossums (Trichosurus vulpecula) to mycobacterial infections(2)(3) suggests a deficiency in this form of their immunity. Alternatively, opossums might be fully competent in their cullular immunity but fail to respond specifically to mycobacterial antigens.
