It has been a tradition of past presidential addresses to comment on the future direction of the veterinary profession. Indeed, the 1955 presidential address was entitled “Quo Vadis” which, loosely translated, means “What of the Future?”

A sample survey of anthelmintic usage and farmers' drenching policies was conducted on 614 sheep farms, in the North and South Islands, selected from among those carrying 1500 or more breeding ewes. The survey was based on information for the 1978/79 and 1979/80 farming years recorded on questionnaires completed during personal interviews between Livestock Officers and the farmers concerned.

Infective larvae ofOstertagia spp. andCooperiaspp. derived from naturally infected dairy calves were subjected to periods of storage of up to 16 weeks at 4°C or 15°C to determine if this treatment would influence their propensity for arrested development in previously worm-free calves. Results showed no significant increase in the propensity ofOstertagia spp. for arrested development in response to the treatments, but a small increase in the case ofCooperiaspp.

Most great earthquakes leave in their wake stories of unusual animal behaviour that preceded the main event, often by an interval long enough to be useful for warning purposes. Although much of this reported behaviour has perhaps been classified as unusual only with the benefit of hindsight, a residue of convincing stories remains and it does seem possible that animals sometimes respond to certain geophysical changes associated with the approach of rock failure, that are not monitored by instruments.
