Attempts were made to identify 900 species of staphylococci or micrococci recovered from samples of bovine milk examined for mastitis pathogens. The presence and identity of haemolysins was recorded together with results of disc diffusion antibiotic sensitivity tests. The occurrence of clinical mastitis was also noted and somatic cell counts (SCC) were performed on milk samples which were normal in appearance.

The construction of a simple, portable restrainer for holding sheep in either the horizontal or vertical position for abdominal radiography is described. Examples of its use in locating slow-release pellets and needles are given.

Over the period 1979–83,466 beef bulls were examined physically and by Blockley's Modified Serving Capacity Test (M.S.C.T.). Seventy-eight bulls were diagnosed as unsound for breeding, of which 64 were detected by the M.S.C.T. Problems included locomotor abnormalities (6), low libido (14), penile deviation (33) and intromission failure (11). The animal welfare aspects of M.S.C.T. are discussed and its value in increasing herd fertility is illustrated with studies of two beef herds, whichshowed improvements of 4–5% in vetting in-calf rates after using the test.

Cysts found in the liver of a horse which had never been out of New Zealand were used to infect two dogs which were slaughtered 35 days after infection. Large numbers ofEchinococcus granulosuswere recovered. These cestodes were compared with mature dog-sheep cestodes, using light and scanning electron microscopy and identified as the dog-horse strain ofE.granulosus.

ATheileriasp. piroplasm has been found in cattle from 10 Northland herds. Transmission studies, involving two splenectomized calves, led to its identification asT. orientalis, which has not been previously found in New Zealand. This piroplasm is relatively benign, but can cause severe anaemia in heavily parasitized animals. The cattle tickHaemaphysalis longicornisis considered to be the likely vector.
