About 30% of farmed land in New Zealand is considered to be selenium-deficient and continued development of soils and pasture will tend to further decrease the concentration of selenium in pasture.

dEstimating selenium status. Although the importance of selenium in ruminants has been recognised for over 30 years, problems associated with selenium deficiency are still frequently identified in grazing livestock operations. There is a growing diversity of tools available for the management of selenium deficiency giving rise to diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas for the veterinary practitioner. There is no single test for selenium adequacy which can be considered superior in all diagnostic situations because the method of choice depends on the objective of the testing procedure.

Sodium monofluoroacetate (1080) is a toxin commonly used for the control of wild and feral pests in New Zealand(1). This toxin has a relatively long, variable, latent period between administration and death(2)(3)(4)with reports ranging from 60 minutes to numerous hours for the same dosage in different animals. Potentially, symptoms experienced in this period may cause suffering and have welfare implications. A variety of symptoms have been reported, most of which are species-dependent(2). These range from vocalisations and hyperactivity (dogs, rats), through nausea and apprehension (humans), to ataxia, weakness, seizure and death in most species examined(2)(5)(6).

Vitiligo is an idiopathic acquired depigmentation, and there are no preceding or concurrent signs of cutaneous inflammation or injury (Scott, 1988). Vitiligo has been most commonly reported in the Holstein-Friesian breed (Meijer and van der Ejk, 1961 ; Meijer, 1965; Meijer, 1966) and it clinically resembles the disease in Arabian horses (Scott, 1988). Vitiligo has also been reported in Japanese black cattle, in conjunction with hyperthyroidism (Sako, 1983; Hayashiet al., 1989).

Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) is an alphaherpesvirus which is a major cause of abortion in mares and it is of a considerable economic importance worldwide (Crabb and Studdert, 1996). EHV-1 has been isolated in New Zealand from cases of abortion and perinatal mortalities (Hutton and Durham, 1997; Horner, 1989). Recently, a herpesvirus was isolated from a lung sample from an aborted foetus and this virus was identified as EHV-1 by the immunoperoxidase technique with the use of a monoclonal antibody specific for EHV-1.

Anthelmintic performance is frequently judged on the basis of percentage efficacy and most veterinarians are probably familiar with products claiming “reductions in worm burdens of better than 99%”. However, while there may be many who are acquainted with such claims, there are also likely to be similar numbers who may not realise that, impressive as they are, such efficacy figures may not always reflect practical reality or correspond with the high degree of anthelmintic effectiveness that they appear to imply. The reason for this is not because of any differences in performance against laboratory and field strains of parasites, but simply because of the way in which their efficacies may have been calculated.
