Opinions offered by 127 veterinary practitioners indicated that cattle ostertagiasis occurred throughout New Zealand; it was seen in all age-groups regularly in some regions; poorly fed animals were more susceptible to outbreaks accompanied by a gradual decline in health; both poor and well-fed cattle were subject to sudden outbreaks which were almost entirely associated with nutritional changes. Most cases were diagnosed by clinical signs. The prescription of multiple anthelmintic doses was the most common treatment.

The relative susceptibilities of different breeds of sheep to experimental sporidesmin poisoning and pentobarbitone narcosis were compared. Merinos were significantly more resistant to sporidesmin poisoning than the other breeds (Romney, Border Leicester and Border Leicester-Romney cross). The pentobarbitone sleeping-times of the same Merinos, and of two other groups of Merinos, were significantly shorter than the other breeds.

A survey was carried out over 16 months to determine the leptospiral status of rats in urban and rural Waikato. One hundred and sixty rats, 112 urban and 48 rural, were examined for leptospiral infection and also for the presence of other bacterial pathogens, dermatophytes, encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus, and ecto- and endoparasites. Data relating to sex, species, maturity, environment of the rats and the season in which they were caught, were subjected to statistical analysis to ascertain what effects these had on the prevalence of the various agents in a population of rats.

In trials to assess the effectiveness of dry-cow therapy, 68% of untreated quarters havingStaphylococcus aureusinfections at drying-off time were still infected at the next lactation. In addition, new infections were observed in 26% of quarters. Dry-cow therapy with penicillin, novobiocin and neomycin eliminated 87% of infections from quarters. Dry-cow treatment with cephalonium was effective in eliminating infections only from quarters sheddingS. aureuson 3 or fewer of the 4 sampling days before drying-off. The incidence of new infections in the dry period was 10% after the combined antibiotic therapy and 17% after cephalonium treatment.
