摘要:
A group of neurological diseases, which includes scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, is caused by prion agents which appear to be comprised solely of an abnormal variant of a cellular protein, PrP. Infectious agents which contain no genetic material pose a conundrum for molecular biologists. Theoretical analysis of the gene encoding PrP has suggested a possible mechanism of replication for this proteinaceous infectious agent. The putative mechanism involves frame-shifting during translation of the PrP gene. The normal and abnormal forms of PrP are predicted to have different amino acid sequences.

Sporidesmin-dosed hoggets which developed photosensitisation were shown to have enlarged adrenal glands and premature involution of the thymus. These sheep also developed high concentrations of plasma cortisol after the onset of photosensitisation. Sporidesmin-dosed sheep which did not show photosensitisation showed less or no adrenal associated changes.

摘要:
Using an indirect enzyme-linked immunsorbent assay, avian adenoviral antigens were detected in the yolk and albumen of eggs derived from broiler breeder chickens which were known to be infected with a strain of virus capable of causing inclusion body hepatitis. Viral antigens were detected in egg yolk (16/60) more frequently than in the albumen (5/60). Direct detection of viral antigens in eggs strongly supports the hypothesis that transovarian transmission of inclusion body hepatitis virus occurs if infection is present in breeder flocks.

A longitudinal study of the feet of cows from a seasonal dairy herd was conducted over a 12 month period to measure the occurrence of subclinical hoof lesions. Eleven 2-year-old cows, entering the herd for the first time, and eleven mature cows were randomly selected from a herd of 415 cows at the end of winter (July 1989) prior to calving. The incidence of lameness in the herd over the 12 months was 2%. None of the trial cows became lame during the study.

Sera collected from the Australian brush-tailed possumTrichosurus vulpeculuin New Zealand in 1975 and 1989 were tested for the presence of antibodies to adenovirus. Of the 231 sera tested in an agar gel diffusion test, eight (3.5%) had precipitating antibodies to the group specific antigen of mammalian adenoviruses. Available data allowed 99/231 sera to be classified as being obtained from either adult (total 62) or sexually immature (total 37) possums. From the adult animals, 4/62 (6.5%) sera were positive, while no reactive sera were detected among the 37 immature animals. The results provide evidence that natural infection by an adenovirus occurs in possums in New Zealand. Further work needs to be carried out to isolate this adenovirus to enable detailed serological and epidemiological studies to be performed. A species-specific “possum adenovirus” could have potential in the biological control of this species.

DNA fingerprinting with the probes33.15andalpha-globin 3HVRhas been used to resolve three cases of disputed paternity in dogs. For each pedigree it was necessary to establish which bands in the DNA fingerprints of the offspring were of paternal origin, and then establish which putative sire carried all these bands. In the first case, a litter of Rhodesian Ridgebacks, twelve DNA bands were informative in establishing paternity. In the second case, a litter of Afghan hounds, five DNA bands established paternity, Lastly, in a litter of Border collies, five DNA bands established paternity. In each case a single dog only sired the entire litter.

摘要:
A 4-year-old female Doberman dog was presented with non-follicular pustules over the trunk and head. After a skin biopsy, bacterial culture of the pustule contacts and an antinuclear antibody blood test, sub-cornea1 pustular dermatosis was diagnosed. Dapsone therapy was found to be ineffective, but systemic gold-therapy at weekly intervals over a 12 week period induced remission which has been maintained for the past 4 years.

An adrenal tumour was diagnosed in a 12-year-old female cross-bred terrier. The dog was presented to the veterinary clinic because she had been gaining weight and had started urinating in the owners' house. Clinical findings included obesity, abdominal enlargement, thinning of the hair coat, seborrhoea sicca, and polydipsia and polyuria. The diagnosis was made by clinical pathology, endocrine function tests and abdominal radiography. Surgical removal of the neo-plastic right adrenal gland resulted in resolution of the clinical signs, including regrowth of the hair coat.

Thirty-two elderly domestic shdrthaired cats (mean age 12.9 years) were treated with radioiodine (131I). The dose of131I administered ranged from 39 mBq to 134 mBq. Twenty-eight cats became euthyroid after treatment, one became hypothyroid and three remained hyperthyrox-aemic. Two of the hyperthyroxaemic cats were successfully re-treated with131I. Five cats died from concurrent diseases within one year of treatment. The administration of a dose of131I selected by assessing the severity of the clinical signs, the size of the thyroid gland(s) and the serum level of thyroxine was an effective treatment for hyperthyroidism.

Thirty-six mice were inoculated intranasally withBordetellu parapertussisorganisms (isolated from sheep with chronic non-progressive pneumonia) to study their deposition and clearance in the lower respiratory tract. The deposition of the organism was greater in the trachea than in the lungs. At 48 hours after inoculation, almost 100% of organisms were cleared from the trachea but only 55% of organisms were cleared from the lungs. This result correlates well with the morphological changes seen previously in the pulmonary parenchyma and airways of mice and lambs experimentally infected with this organism.
