摘要:
Samples of bottom muds from lakes and waterways in the Auckland area were inoculated into bottles of cooked meat medium. After incubation, the media were tested for reduction ofClostridium botulinumtoxin which was detected with samples from 11 of the 20 sites examined. Although toxins produced from all positive samples were neutralized by specific antisera to both type C and D toxins, it is likely thatC. botulinumtype Cα is the only type present in the Auckland area. All samples from other urban areas of the North Island gave negative results.

摘要:
A bilateral cataract was noted to occur in sheep on a New Zealand Romney stud. Extensive breeding trials showed that this defect was inherited as an autosomal dominant. As such this form of cataract is of minimal importance to the sheep industry as control is merely by culling affected individuals.

摘要:
Vaccination of four calves with Leptavoid (Wellcome New Zealand Limited) gave rise toLeptospira interrogansserovarshardjoandpomonamicroscopic agglutination test titres that could not be distinguished in magnitude from post-infection titres. Vaccination of four calves with Lepto-3 (ICI Tasman Limited) gave rise to much lower titres.

摘要:
This paper describes the distinctive radiographic changes detected in the dorso-caudal lungfields of four racing thoroughbreds recently affected by exercise-induced epistaxis. A diffuse but localized increase in density was seen in all four cases, which demonstrated a variation from a predominantly alveolar density to an interstitial pattern and finally to increased bronchial markings. Evolution of the radiographic pattern of the pulmonary densities appeared to be related to the time that had elapsed since the bleeding incident. The implications of the changing pattern and site of the densities are discussed.

摘要:
A nine-month-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was examined because it could not withdraw its tongue into its mouth and had difficulty eating and drinking. These clinical signs were first observed when the dog was two months of age. On percussion of the tongue a dimple could be produced and there was electromyographic evidence of myotonia. Histological examination showed replacement of muscle fibres by adipose tissue, focal areas of myonecrosis, neutrophil infiltration and proliferation of sub-sarcolemmal nuclei. These changes were considered to be consistent with a primary myopathy similar to paramyotonia in man. No related dogs were found to be affected.

摘要:
An investigation was made into the prevalence of leptospiral infection in cattle. An area 50 km radius was selected in a region where leptospirosis was reputedly common. Farmers volunteered 250 herds with 39 500 cows for testing and 7 500 animals were selected and sampled. Twenty-nine cows (0.4%) on 14 (5.6%) of the farms had leptospiruria at the first examination. Leptospirae were cultured from the urines of nine of these animals and all wereLeptospira interrogansserovarhardjo. Serologically 12.5% of cows had titres of 1:200 or greater tohardjoand 3.5% titres of 1:200 or greater topomona. In the Spring of 1977, there was evidence of clinical leptospirosis in calves associated with only one of the herds and no clinical leptospirosis in the 250 lactating herds, although leptospiral titres were found in 88% of them. This indicated that clinical disease was much less common than infection. We concluded that leptospirosis was of minor economic importance in dairy cattle, although it could be significant in individual herds, and a health hazard to farm workers.

摘要:
In late December/early January 1979/80, deaths occurred in 30 red deer (Cervus elaphus) fawns. Evidence is presented to suggest that these deaths most likely resulted from heavy infestations of ticks (Huemuphysalis longicornis).
