摘要:
A field trial was conducted to compare four injection regimes of corticosteroids to induce parturition. The treatments were: I 20–25 mg intramuscular injection of dexamethasone trimethyl acetate; II 20 mg dexamethasone trimethyl acetate initially, repeated 6 days later; III 20–25 mg dexamethasone trimethyl acetate followed 8 days later by a 20 mg injection of betamethasone: IV betamethasone daily starting at 1 mg/day and doubling every second day until day 9 beyond which a 16 mg/day level was maintained until calving. Data were collected from 879 cows on 46 farms. Calf mortality, considering only cows treated at least ten days before calving, was 19%, II 16%, III 5% and IV 9% for the four treatments and increased with increasing prematurity. Response time (initial injection to calving) was 11.5, 10.3, 10.0 and 9.2 days for the four treatments and increased by 0.7 days for each week increase in prematurity at first injection. Mean prematurity at birth was 15 days. Sixteen percent of cows had retained foetal membranes 24 hours after calving. Of 447 cows with fertility data, 90 were culled non-pregnant and 68 had calving induced again the season following the trial. Mean time from calving to conception for those calving normally was 57.2 ± 17.4 days. Prematurity and retained foetal membranes did not affect the calving — conception interval.

摘要:
Anti-staphylococcal serum, inoculated intramammarily, significantly reduced the number of bacteria recovered from mammary glands in which staphylococcal mastitis had been induced. In addition, there was an alleviation of some of the pathological clinical signs following the immune-serum treatment. Intramammary inoculated normal serum and systemically inoculated immune serum failed to elicit any protection.

摘要:
Aqueous solutions of zinc sulphate were administered orally to sheep over 5 days (0.125, 0.5 and 2.0 g Zn++/sheep/day) to bracket a 3-day period during which sporidesmin also was dosed. The zinc sulphate treatment gave protection from the effects of sporidesmin when compared with control groups dosed sporidesmin alone. Body weight changes were improved and liverdamage scores, numbers of animals showing photosensitisation, serum levels of glutamic oxaloacetic acid transaminase and total bilirubin were lower. The protective effects of zinc sulphate were obtained at levels well abovethose required for growth and maintenance. Protection increased but at a diminishing rate with increasing dose rate of zinc. Because of the small safety margin which exists between the dose rate of zinc sulphate which will provide adequate protection and that which will cause toxicity the use of zinc for the control of facial eczema is not recommended.

摘要:
This paper describes poisonings that occurred when two cows were fed, small quantities of minced white cloverper rumen fistulamover a two-hour period. One animal died; the other survived following treatment with a specific antidote. The level of cyanide found in the leaf material was 200 /g greentissue. It seemsclear from calculations based on this result that the intake of glucosides was sufficient to account for the results observed. Aspects of these cases are discussed in relation to findings of other workers. These cases demonstrate the potential dangers of the high levels of cyanogenetic glucosides in N.Z. white clovers.
