摘要:
Mannosidosis is an inherited, lethal, neurological disease of Angus and Murray Grey calves and is associated with a deficiency of lysosomal α-mannosidase. Heterozygous individuals may be recognised inasmuch as, having one normal gene and one defective gene coding for this enzyme, they have α-mannosidase levels between those of normal and diseased individuals. This phenomenon is the basis of test and control schemes introduced by both the New Zealand Angus Association (Inc.) and the Murray Grey Society of New Zealand (Inc.) in conjunction with the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. In these, a routine serum test of age-and sex-matched groups identifies the majority of individuals as normal or heterozygous. Diagnosis of the genotype of the remaining 3–5% may be assisted by reference to the genotype of parents, if known, and a general familial check of results also acts as a quality-control mechanism. These checks are routinely performed in the Murray Grey scheme before results are sent out, but are not part of the Angus scheme. A special supplementary test on blood neutrophils of greater sensitivity and sophistication is used for animals whose genotype cannot be resolved with an acceptable degree of probability by the above means.

摘要:
Zinc sulphate solution, administered concurrently with the mycotoxin sporidesmin, gave significant protection against the toxin. The protective effect was shown in maintained milk production and bodyweights, and in reduced liver damage as determined by serum enzyme (gamma-glutamyltransferase, ornithine carbamyltransferase) analysis and by subjective grading of the liver damage after slaughter. There was no overt facial eczema in either group but, in sporidesmin dosed cows not receiving zinc sulphate, there was a fall in milk yield and in bodyweight. Serum enzyme levels did not rise until more than a week after dosing at which time milk yields were showing partial recovery. Serum concentrations of the enzyme gamma-gluta-myltransferase (EC 23.2.2) were found to be correlated to the severity of the liver damage observed at post-mortem.

摘要:
The data involved, and the steps taken, in establishing a fertility control programme are discussed. The incorporation of this fertility control programme into a computer programme is described. This involves the processing of data on reproduction (on calving, oestrus, insemination and pregnancy diagnosis) by computer system. This programme is designed to provide the dairy farmers with information to facilitate herd management. Thus, each month the farmer is sent an advisory list stating which cows should be inseminated, which should be dried off, and those expected to calve. In addition, he will receive a bi-annual report on the fertility status of his herd. Among others, the following terms are listed: the pregnancy rate after first insemination, the interval between parturition and first insemination, the interval between parturition and conception, the number of inseminations per conception and the number of cows culled through failure to conceive. The initial results and advantages of operating such a programme are given.
