The effect of 4-weekly anthelmintic dosing and other treatment regimes on the serological response of dogs toTaenia oviswas examined. Most dogs which were frequently fed infected meat and dosed with a cestocidal anthelmintic at 4-week intervals eventually showed a positive ELISA absorbance. The absence of dosing, or intermittent dosing, of repeatedly infected dogs raised ELISA absorbances to very high levels in most dogs and these absorbances took an increasingly longer time to fall after each new infection. The feeding of large numbers of frozen, dead cysts to sensitised dogs raised absorbance levels. The serological test forT. ovisinfections in dogs does not detect false postives. Positive tests result from the dog being exposed toT. ovisscolex secretory antigen.

Seventy-nine suspected false-positive sera, obtained over 1 year from routine submissions forBrucella ovisserological testing, were used in this study. These sera, which exhibited titres in the complement fixation test, but which because of their epidemiological history and their reactions in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and gel diffusion test wereisuspected to be false positives, were further analysed by immunoblotting. In blots, usingB. ovisantigens, rough lipopolysacchride was identified as the major, immuno-reactive bacterial component. Antibodies against this macromolecule were present in 46.8% of the suspected falsepositive sera.

This study aimed to test whether den sites in a single small area containing a cluster of tuberculous brushtail possums were more exposed to adverse environmental conditions than those in a nearby area where no tuberculous possums had been found. No significant differences were found in the visually assessed quality of dens between the two areas. This suggests either that den quality is relatively unimportant in the epidemiology of bovine tuberculosis in possums, or that the differences in den quality are not large enough or are too spatially localised to be detected with the methods used.

The gastroduodenal mucosa of 30 healthy dogs was examined by endoscope after 7 days of oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug administration. The dogs were divided into five groups. One group received ketoprofen (1 mg/kg every 24 h), one group copper-indomethacin (0.2 mg/kg every 12 h), one group 1 mg of prednisolone and 200 mg of cinchophen (1 tablet per 20 kg every 12 h), one group aspirin (15 mg/kg every 12 h) and one group gelatin (I capsule every 12 h).

Fifty, 5–6 month-old lambs were randomly allocated to five equal groups. Three groups of lambs were immunised by three oxfendazole-abbreviated (artificial) infections ofTrichostrongylus colubriformisandOstertagia circutncincta. Group 1 was immunised with a high dose of larvae, Group 2 with a medium dose and Group 3 with a low dose. A fourth group was treated with oxfendazole only and a fifth group was not treated (control). All groups were grazed together on pasture naturally contaminated with nematode larvae. Immunisation significantly reduced the number of eggs per gram of faeces in all three groups, but the lowest faecal egg count was seen in Group 3 (immunised with the lowest number of larvae). Significantly better liveweight gains and wool weight were observed in Group 2 animals than in the control group. Of all anthelmintic-treated animals, only Group 1 lambs did not have a signscantly lower dag weight than controls.

Four groups of five Romney lambs were treated by plunge dipping with one of four registered organophosphorus flystrike preventatives. Untreated lambs acted as controls. The sheep were challenged at weekly intervals with larval implants of organophosphate-susceptible and -resistant strains ofLucilia cuprina. All four treatments provided 19–21 weeks protection against susceptible larvae but chlorfenvinphos provided the longest protection (16–17 weeks), followed by propetamphos (15–16 weeks), dichlofenthion (10–13 weeks) and diazinon (9–13 weeks), against the resistant strain.

Two cases are described in which strains ofCooperiaspp. of cattle were found to be resistant to either the oral or the injectable formulations of ivermectin. Injectable moxidectin was not effective against the latter strain and doramectin was not effective against either of the ivermectin-resistantCooperiaisolates. In both cases, the anthelmintic efficacy of oral levamisole was 100%.

A Border collie was presented at the age of 9 weeks with several lesions of the right forelimb, including a reddish-blue haemangiomatous macula in the medio-dorsal part of the elbow, multiple, scattered small cavernous haemangioma-like lesions at the plantar part of the foot and a general hypertrophy of the limb. X-rays of the limb showed osteolysis. On skin biopsy, telangiectatic veins were observed. The rest of the body did not show any skin lesions or hypertrophy. The dog was otherwise healthy. Due to the extension of the lesions and worsening of the limb swelling, it was decided to amputate the affected limb. The dog remained healthy for 2 weeks, but then passed through episodes of anaemia, and finally died suddenly with signs of shock. Dissection of the limb after amputation revealed hypoplasia and aplasia of the deep venous system in the lower part of the leg. No arterio-venous shunts were noticed. In man, this syndrome, characterised by an insufficiently developed deep venous system associated with local overgrowth of the limb and cutaneous telangiectasia, is known as Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome.

Cysts in the anterior mandible of sheep are reportedly uncommon in New Zealand((1)) although their prevalence and economic significance are unknown. They usually develop around an unerupted permanent incisor, perhaps as a result of an abnormality in the eruption process, but their pathogenesis is not clear. They appear as solitary swellings which grow slowly and are lined by stratified squamous epithelium. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of these lesions in mixed-age ewes at meat plants in the South Island of New Zealand.

Ruminants cannot avoid ingesting soil(1). Studies of sheep dosed with soil labelled with radio-active isotopes have shown that small increments of selenium, cobalt, manganese and zinc are absorbed from soil during passage through the gastrointestinal tract(2). This discovery led the authors to postulate that ingested soil became a source of micro-nutrients for grazing animals. The ingestion of soil has the opposite effect on copper availability(1). In this study, sheep were dosed with soils of known molybdenum concentrations. All soils were inhibitory and probably reduced copper availability by 50%. Moreover, the ingestion of certain soils produced increases in urinary molybdenum and zinc, indicating that molybdenum and zinc in soil can be biologically available.
