The applications of several laboratory analyses to the diagnosis of conditions leading to sub-optimal production of grazing livestock have been examined by a Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries' Study Group. Information required to make valid interpretations of analyses was sought from current research work. Analysis of serum magnesium appears to have good predictive value for indicating when magnesium supplementation will generate a milk production response. Comparable information is not available for selenium or copper. Present laboratory analyses for diagnosing non-recovery from facial eczema, or preventing the “parturition syndrome”, are insufficiently reliable to be recommended. Similarly, a profile for energy status has not yet been developed.

Seven groups of chickens were challenged with a field isolate of fowl pox virus at 18 weeks old. The birds in the groups that had been vaccinated 3 weeks previously with fowl pox vaccinates showed no signs of disease. Birds which had not been vaccinated against fowl pox developed upper respiratory disease after challenge, and some birds had diphtheritic tracheitis and laryngitis which appeared identical to that commonly seen under field conditions. Seven days after challenge, fowl pox virus was recovered from the tracheas of unvaccinated birds, but not from the vaccinated ones.

The history, clinical, laboratory and post-mortem findings of a myeloproliferative disorder in a cat are described. The main features in peripheral blood were the presence of a high proportion of cells with abnormal morphology, and a large number of platelets, many of which were large and had immature staining characteristics. The abnormal cells had some characteristics of the granulocytic cell line. There was a proliferation of megakaryocytes within the spleen. The findings were characteristic of a granulocytic leukaemia with some evidence of a megakaryocytic myelosis.

A thoroughbred foal developed painful swellings of the fetlocks that consisted of exostoses above and below the joints, and excess fluid in the joint capsules. Blood samples revealed a PCV of 24%, a Hb level of 7.5g/100ml, and a serum copper level of 0.1mg/l. Treatment with calcium copper edetate resulted in clinical improvement and recovery.

The aetiology ofotitis externais complex and several factors are involved, either as primary initiating causes or as secondary complications. In many cases, the condition is brought about by a combination of events, resulting in dynamic changes in the physiological, anatomical and microbiological state of the ear. Thus, identification of the cause in a particular case is very often impossible, impractical, or too time-consuming. Furthermore, the expense of bacteriological investigations may not be justified because the findings can be very difficult to interpret. Therefore, there are many occasions when a combination of therapeutic agents in one preparation — polypharmacy — would be advantageous as a first-line treatment. It is important, indeed fundamental, that such a medicament should be effective against all the common aetiological factors. Ideally, an antibiotic, an antifungal, a parasiticidal and an anti-inflammatory agent should be included. The results obtained in a clinical trial with a combined preparation that met the above requirements have shown that this approach to therapy is efficacious.

Three commercial flocks, deriving replacement rams from 15 parent studs, had respectively 33 of 71,13 of 31 and 8 of 82 rams positive to theBr. ovisCF test. In the first flock, clinical findings supported a diagnosis of activeBrucellainfection. In the other two flocks, positive results were attributed to vaccinational titres persisting for up to 3 years after vaccination. It is concluded that permanent identification of vaccinated rams would assist inBr. ovisflock-testing programmes.
