The majority of tissue specimens submitted for the isolation ofMycobacterium boviscontain contaminating microorganisms and therefore require selective decontamination before bacteriological examination. The purpose of this study was to identify the preferred decontaminant amongst four commonly used reagents. The four decontaminants used in the study were 1-hexadecylpyridinium chloride, sodium hydroxide, benzalkonium chloride and oxalic acid. A comparison was made of the toxicity of the four decontaminants forM. bovisand their ability to control contamination. Used at the recommended concentrations, all reagents showed a significant degree of toxicity. The toxicity of the decontaminants for three field strains and one laboratory strain ofM. boviswere similar, but a second laboratory strain, AN.5, was more susceptible. It was also observed that as the concentration of each reagent decreased an abrupt change from control to lack of control of contaminating micro-organisms occurred. Hexadecylpyridinium chloride was found to be the best all-round reagent because at concentrations that effectively controlled contamination this reagent was the least toxic toM. bovis.A 1orotocol for handling specimens based on an assessment of the risk of contamination is recommended.

The isolated heads of a Friesian bull and three large, Large White pigs were shot from various aspects with a 12-gauge shotgun using both a single 28 g solid lead projectile and buckshot, the latter consisting of nine individual lead pellets with a combined mass of 28 g. The sites of impact to the skull included the conventional frontal region, an occipital site and immediately behind the ear.

Two herbicides (glyphosate and paraquat) and a plant growth regulator (paclobutrazol) were applied to endophyte-infected (Acremonium lolii) perennial ryegrass swards. Subsamples of these swards were then chemically analysed at intervals up to 28 days later for lolitrem B, the compound responsible for perennial ryegrass staggers in domestic livestock. Glyphosate and paclobutrazol had no effect on lolitrem B concentrations. Paraquat applications decreased lolitrem B concentrations in the herbage. Because none of the chemicals tested increased the concentration of lolitrem B in the herbage, they are unlikely to be directly implicated in perennial ryegrass staggers in grazing animals.

Lamb copper status is commonly assessed by measuring copper concentrations in four liver samples collected from lines of lambs sent to meat slaughtering premises. High liver copper concentrations were found in lambs examined in April and May. Five farms with two or more lamb liver copper concentrations greater than 3000 𝛍mol/kg on a wet matter basis and two farms with adequate copper concentrations but less than 3000 𝛍mollkg in the autumn of 1992 were selected for a more detailed investigation into the factors affecting their lamb copper status in 1993. High liver copper status was associated with low pasture molybdenum, grazing paddocks recently topdressed with copper sulphate, supplementing with mineralised drenches and copperised salt licks, and the high copper content in chicory. Lamb liver copper concentrations were significantly (pp<0.05) higher in the autumn than in the summer on two of three farms.

The effects of enzootic pneumonia on average daily weight gain and number of days taken to reach slaughter weight was studied in 333 bacon-weight pigs. Each 1% of lung volume affected by enzootic pneumonia was shown to reduce average daily gain by 2.2 grams and increase the numbers of days to slaughter by 0.61 days. The cost of these reductions in performance was calculated to be about NZ$l for each 1% of lung affected.

Sporidesmin, a mycotoxin produced by some strains ofPithomyces chartarum, is responsible for the hepatogenous photosensitisation disease facial eczema, which causes severe losses in agricultural revenue in New Zealand. A sporidesmin-producing strain ofP. chartarum, isolated in New Zealand, was grown in co-culture with a South African strain that does not produce the mycotoxin. Competition occurred between the two strains when grown both on agar plates and on dried ryegrass, with a significant decrease in the total amount of sporidesmin produced. Biological control of toxkenicP. chartarumcan thus occur under laboratory conditions, raising the possibility of similar control in the field situation.

Two cats with chronic eosinophilic skin disease were investigated. The clinical investigation of the skin disease in one cat was limited and inflammatory bowel disease was diagnosedpost mortem.A history of weight loss and a palpably thickened bowel in the second cat suggested concurrent gastrointestinal disease. Diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease was confirmed on biopsy. Treatment with azathioprine and methylprednisolone acetate resolved the signs of gastrointestinal disease, the pruritus and 95% of the skin lesions. The concurrence of eosinophilic papulocrustous dermatitis and eosinophilic bowel disease raises the possibility, of their being linked bv a common aetioloav or nathophysiology.

A 12-gauge shotgun, loaded with either a solid 28 g lead slug or buckshot consisting of nine individual lead pellets with a total mass of 28 g, was used to shoot the heads of one dead common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and five dead long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melaena) varying in length from 2.5 m to 5 m. The dolphin and the smallest pilot whale were shot with both projectiles from the dorsal surface of the head. The projectiles penetrated the head and dorsal surface of the skull, but not the base of the cranium. This site using buckshot was not effective in the larger animals. Two whales between 3 and 4 m in length were shot with buckshot through the lateral side of the head caudal to and above the eye, without penetration of the contralateral side of the head. It is concluded that shooting smaller cetaceans with a shotgun can be effective and safe. Further work is required to develop more suitable projectiles for cetaceans up to the size of mature pilot whales.

The implications of shooting animals in the area of the occipito-atlantal junction was evaluated in three sheep by recording changes in the EEG activity. In one sheep, a shot which entered the occipito-atlantal junction and fractured the first cervical vertebra failed to produce insensibility. In contrast, a shot in another sheep which struck the occipital condyles of the skull resulted in loss of cortical evoked responses, the presence of high amplitude low frequency activity and ultimately all loss of brain activity.
