摘要:
Groups of sheep and lambs were held in the stockyards at a meat works for various time periods up to 48 hours prior to slaughter. Carcase weights and the physical nature and weights of ruminoreticulum contents were measured after slaughter and group mean values compared. There was a slight decrease in carcase weights in lambs with increased holding periods and the weights of ruminoreticulum contents were reduced in both sheep and lambs, but the differences were small and only significant between a few groups. It was found that the fluidity of ruminoreticulum contents increased significantly during the 48 hour holding period. This change was most rapid in the first 24 hours and was exacerbated by making water available in sheep but not in lambs. Further studies indicated that this difference between sheep and lambs was probably due to differences in water consumption. Sampling of the ruminoreticulum contents from a number of different lines of sheep and lambs indicated that these findings might be typical of the majority of sheep and lambs slaughtered at the works.

摘要:
Cooperia pectinata, a nematode parasite hitherto undetected in New Zealand, was recovered from the small intestine of a six-month-old red deer (Cervus elaphus) born on a deer farm in Taihape. The source of this infection is unknown but it seems likely that it originated from feral stock.

摘要:
The treatment of a cervical fracture/dislocation in an 11-year-old Anglo-Arab gelding is described. Six months after surgical repair of a luxation of the second left true intervertebral joint the animal appeared clinically normal.

摘要:
Physical examination and Blockey's, modified serving capacity test (M.S.C.T.) were used to assess breeding soundness in 220 Angus bulls and 58 bulls of other breeds. Physical examination detected only 7 bulls with genital abnormalities (5 intra-scrotal lesions, 1 inguinal hernia, 1 penile injury), while 41 of the 278 performed poorly in the M.S.C.T. Of the poor performers, 19 (all older Angus animals) had corkscrew deviation of the extruded penis, 4 had other genital abnormalities, 4 had locomotor system abnormalities and in the remaining 14 the problem appeared related to poor libido. The severity of the corkscrew penile defect varied but most of the 19 affected bulls were unable to achieve successful intromission in over 50% of mounts.

摘要:
A fatal syndrome occurring more commonly in low-mouthed ewes of all breeds with twin lambs at foot, 2 to 3 weeks after lambing and under nutritional stress, is described. Treatment of affected ewes was generally unsuccessful, but prevention of further serious losses was achieved by supplementary feeding, preferably with lucerne hay.
