摘要:
Salt blocks containing 30 or 120 ppm selenium were tested as the sole supplement for sheep farmed in a selenium-deficient area of New Zealand (Te Anau). Both concentrations were unsatisfactory in preventing selenium deficiency. In five trials using 120 ppm Se salt, the highest percentages of sheep found to be deficient were 31% (lambs) and 32% (ewes). If sheep which were classed as marginally deficient were included these percentages became 63% (lambs) and 56% (ewes). Some instances of selenium-responsive unthriftiness in lambs were encountered, and in one trial there was the possibility of selenium-responsive infertility having contributed to the low lambing performance of the ewes. There was no evidence of white muscle disease. Selenium levels in the liver and kidney were well below the permitted maximum. Because selenised salt failed to eliminate selenium deficiency, its use as a sole supplement for sheep grazing selenium deficient pasture is not recommended.

摘要:
Pleural adhesions in 155 young (3 to 15 montsh old) and 474 older sheep were examined macroscopically and by light microscopy. The pulmonary tissue under the adhesions was also examined. Two major types of adhesions were encountered, and were called type I and type II adhesions. Stages in the development and resolution of the type I adhesions were called fibrinous, early dense, dense and thin. Except for abnormalities of the blood circulatory system, the type I adhesions were similar to those in experimental models. Type II adhesions were proliferative lesions with villous projections, strands and nodules. Abnormality of the blood circulatory system also occurred in these adhesions. Most type I adhesions appeared to have developed in association with pulmonary abscessation and pneumonia. No relationship between type II adhesions and lesions in the underlying lung was obvious.

摘要:
The persistent anthelmintic effect of subcutaneously and orally administered ivermectin given at a dose rate of 0.2 mg/kg was evaluated against experimentally induced infections ofHaemonchus contortus,Ostertagiaspp.,Trichostrongylusspp. andCooperia curticeiin sheep. While both ivermectin treatments apparently resulted in some reduction in the establishment of most of the parasite species examined, only forC. curticeiwere these reductions statistically significant. ForC. curticei, statistically significant antiparasitic activity was evident in animals five and ten days after treatment with ivermectin given by injection and five days after treatment with ivermectin given orally. The possible relevance of these results to parasite control and the potential for selecting for anthelmintic resistance are briefly discussed.
