The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is a host for two louse species,Damalinia longicornisandSolenopotes burmeisteri. Little is known of their prevalence or population dynamics; numbers are likely to peak in winter. Numbers may increase secondarily to malnutrition or disease. Lice are unlikely to seriously affect deer health under most conditions. “Pour-on” insecticides have been used for treatment but their efficacy has not been critically assessed. Animals can be sprayed using garden spray equipment, providing that such equipment has not been used for other toxic chemicals such as weed killers. Little is known of the toxicity of insecticides for deer, so they should be used with care and not used on stressed animals. No lice have been recorded from the fallow deer (Dama dama) in New Zealand.

Massey University veterinary students stated a strong preference for careers in practice. They appeared to have entered the course with this orientation and were not influenced by their subsequent experiences. Personal freedom and an interesting job were highly correlated with their expectations of overall job satisfaction, but anticipated salary was not.

Eleven goats given dog-derivedSarcocystissporocysts, showed illness from day 18. Doses of 5 × 106sporocysts caused a progressive temperature rise, with peaks at 6,11 and 18 days. Necropsy at 18 and 19 days revealed multiple petechiation and schizogony in endothelial cells. In goats given smaller doses, Hb, PCV and TP levels fell from day 17. IFAT titres rose from day 28.

A warm complement fixation test that will detect antibody in sheepserum in the virtual absence of anti-complementary activity is described. Sheep antibody-antigen complexes were detected by fixation of sheep complement. Sheep serum, heparinized or Mg++—EGTA plasma was used as the source of sheep complement. Sheep-antibody-sensitized human erythrocytes were used as the haemolytic indicator cells for sheep complement. As the modified complement-fixation test was performed in the presence of Mg++—EGTA, sheep C probably reacts with sheep Ab-Ag complexes by a different mechanism than does guinea-pig complement.

A bovine adenovirus was isolated from a yearling heifer with systemic adenovirus infection. The virus was characterized as a subgroup 2 bovine adenovirus but could not be typed with reference antisera to the 10 known bovine adenovirus serotypes. A serological survey of cattle in the northern half of the North Island showed the prevalence of precipitating antibodies to bovine adenoviruses to be 43.3%.
