A study of 40 Hereford cattle dwarfs in New Zealand confirmed that dwarfism in this country was morphologically the same as that described in North American Herefords and that its mode of inheritance was as an autosomal recessive trait. The histological architecture of growth plates was essentially normal but palisading columns were shorter and more irregular than in controls. A small proportion of cbondrocytes in dwarf cartilage showed increased areas of cytoplasmic metachromasia, which probably coincided with increased cystic dilations of endoplasmic reticulum containing granular material as noted by electronmicroscopy. The above growth-plate abnormalities were neither prominent nor consistent enough to be of diagnostic significance; nor do they currently help understanding of the underlying pathogenic mechanism of dwarfing. Histological and mucopolysaccharide excretion studies unequivocally demonstrated that this disease is not a mucopolysaccharidosis as had previously been reported.

The activity of two betamethasone (BM) suspensions, which differed only in their solids:vehicle ratio, was examined in cattle. Two groups of 10 cows received by subcutaneous injection either 20ml of a 2mg/ml aqueous suspension of BM alcohol or 2ml of a 20mg/ml aqueous suspension. A further 10 cows served as a saline-treated control group.

Differences in muscular activity and rates of decline in the pH of theM. longissimus dorsiof lambs subjected to different methods of stunning and slaughter were observed. Lambs electrically stunned by a “head-to-leg” method had significantly lower initial pH values as compared to animals stunned by an electrical “head-only” method, or by captive bolt, or without any form of stunning prior to slaughter. When electrical stunning by a “head-to-leg” method was combined with low voltage (24V) electrical stimulation during slaughter and bleeding, mean pH values declined at the highest rate and fell to approximately 6.0 within two hours of slaughter. This last procedure, therefore, has the potential to greatly reduce times between slaughter and freezing without increasing the risk of cold shortening and the associated toughness of meat.

Earlier work confirmed that the fundamental lesion of superphosphate poisoning is an acute toxic tubular nephritis in which both phosphate and fluoride may play a part but their respective roles could not be determined. In this study, sheep poisoned by sodium fluoride (NaF) were compared with sheep poisoned by superphosphate containing approximately 1.5% fluoride. The LD50of NaF was in the range 100 to 300 mg/kg (45 to 135 mg F/kg). This range is of the same order as the amount of fluoride in a toxic dose of superphosphate (70 to 90mg F/kg).

Sir,- The presence of neurotoxins, two of which were named lolitrem A and lolitrem B, in perennial ryegrass associated with outbreaks of ryegrass staggers (RGS) in sheep was reported in 1981.(6) Lolitrems are lipid-soluble compounds which induce protracted tremors when dosed i.p. to mice and which have also been found in a number of lines of ryegrass seed.(4)Lolitrem-containing seed, fed to sheep, produced symptoms similar to those of RGS, whereas no symptoms were seen in sheep fed lolitrem-free seed.(04) The reversability of the induced neurotoxicity, a well-known feature of RGS(05) (07) was observed in these experiments.
