Ollulanus tricuspusis a parasite of the stomach of domestic cats and other animals, with a worldwide distribution. It can sometimes cause severe gastritis.

The symptoms and pathology of a domestic cat infected withOllulanusare described. The subsequent investigation of the cat colony of which this cat was a member is detailed. It is concluded thatOllulanus tricuspisis a significant pathogen in the colony and that the management and housing of the colony may simulate the conditions under which Felidae in zoos have been shown to succumb to this parasite.

Faecal samples from clinically normal farmed red deer, wapiti, fallow deer; and feral red deer and white tail deer were examined for members of the genus Yersinia. From 922 samples 176 strains ofY.enterocolitica, 56 strains ofY.frederiksenii, 29 strains ofY.kristensenii, eight strains ofY.intermedia, and seven strains ofY.pseudotuberculosiswere isolated. High isolation rates of Yersinia sp. were recorded from some farms. Two herds had isolation rates of 33.3% and 36.8%. Sixteen strains of Yersinia sp. in addition to strains ofY.psuedotuberculosiswere found to be Hela cell invasive.

Whole bloods from weaned lambs with severe selenium responsive unthriftiness usually contain <5 ng Se/ml. Mildly or moderately affected lambs have blood levels of 5–10 ng/ml. Selenium responsive infertility in ewes appears to be associated with whole blood selenium levels below 10 ng/ml.

Sir: - In 1982 the author requested that cobalt be included in a series of analyses of plant leaf tissue samples submitted to the Plant Analysis Laboratory, Ruakura Plant and Soil Research Station. Samples were taken from 92 sites on 39 properties adjacent to Hamilton. All samples were carefully collected and submitted unwashed. Cobalt - containing fertilizers had not been applied by any of the present owners.

Sir. - Carcinoma/adenocarcinoma of the small intestine (ASI) is thought to be rare in domestic animals. (4)(5)(12) although Head II) noted that in some geographical locations it may occur frequently in sheep and cattle. In New Zealand the prevalence of ASI in sheep is very high. (7)(9) The equivalent lesion was not reported in a review of 372 diagnoses of cattle tumours examined at the Ruakura Animal Health Laboratory during the period 1955 to 1968. (8) Two cases of adenocarcinoma of the rectum were noted and site of origin was not determined for 34 metastatic adenocarcinomas. Recently however. Johnstone et al ll ) described 6 cases of ASI examined at the veterinary school of Massey University. They noted that the lesions bore a similarity to ASI in sheep and suggested that carcinomas of the bovine intestine, like those in sheep and man, (11) may have a higher prevalence rate in New Zealand than in most other countries.

Sir: - In 1981 an outbreak of vulvovaginitis in a Saanen goat herd was reported. regulate their internal temperature.(6) The disease was characterised by erosions of the vulval and vaginal mucosa with erythema, oedema and a ycllowish mucopurulent discharge. Recovery usually occurred within a week.
