Deaths of sheep three to four weeks after lambing were investigated in a flock of 2500 mixed age Perendale ewes. From the history and clinical signs a diagnosis of hypomagnesaemic tetany was made. This was confirmed by the successful treatment of an affected ewe and from estimations of serum magnesium levels of other ewes in the flock.

Lymphocystis disease, affecting snake-skin gouramis (Trichogaster peltoralis) and blue gouramis (T. tricopterus), was diagnosed histologically in 2 shipments of imported tropical fish. Typical virus particles were readily demonstrated by electron microscopy in negatively stained preparations and in sectioned tissues. Attempts at viral isolation in 2 fish cell lines (RTG-2 and FHM) were unsuccessful as were attempts to transmit the infection to pearl gouramis (T. leeri).

Twenty-five of 40 red deer (Cervus elaphus) exhibited corneal opacities and ulceration resembling mild bovine infectious keratitis. Attempts to incriminate either a bacterial or viral causal agent were unsuccessful.

Ninety-eight serum samples and 101 kidneys were examined from feral goats submitted for slaughter from Raglan county. It was found that 13•3% of the sera had agglutinating antibodies to serovarshardjoandbalcanica. Onehardjoand threebalcanicaisolates were made from the kidneys of the same group of goats. No Hebdomadis group titres were demonstrated from a further 18 blood samples of feral goats from the Taranaki and Taupo regions. Four of the total 116 sera examined had titres of between 1:24 to 1:196 toballum.

Serum and Mg2+-ethyleneglycoltetraacetic acid (EGTA) plasma from 14 domestic or laboratory animal species had no anti-complementary activity for sheep complement (C). Serum samples from 8 species and all 14 Mg2+-EGTA plasma samples were anti-complementary towards guinea-pig C. Thus, use of sheep C in a warm complement fixation text (with human erythrocytes sensitized with sheep antiserum, IgM, slow or fast γ-globulin antibody), in the presence or absence of Mg2+-EGTA, may be a satisfactory method of eliminating anticomplementary activity.
