摘要:
The differential nature of job activities related to four areas of veterinary work, club or private practice, industry or commerce, Animal Health and Meat Divisions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, were investigated using a ten factor rating scale. The same scale was used to measure these veterinarians' non-job activities. Significant differences were found in average levels of job satisfaction. Meat Division veterinarians, for example, rated their jobs as offering little discretion or control over what, when and how they do things, lacking variety in activities, requiring less mental effort and giving them little control over the speed at which they work. These veterinarians also had the lowest level of job satisfaction. Non-job activities are seen to compensate for non-satisfactory aspects of a job, and levels of life satisfaction among veterinarians was not related to being in a specific area of practice. Certain job and non-job activities, however, are related to the degree of mental well-being in a veterinarian.

摘要:
A ram lamb with congenital goitre showed signs of respiratory distress at birth. All previously affected lambs from this flock had been born dead or had died soon after birth. The serum free-thyroxine level at birth was low (9.8pmol/ℓ) but treatment with oral L-thyroxine resulted in an increase in thyroxine blood levels to above normal and regression of the goitre. Four weeks after withdrawal of thyroid supplementation and when the lamb was eight weeks old, the radio iodide uptake mechanism of the thyroid glands was shown to be intact but the iodide was not organified. Low normal peroxidase activity was demonstrated in fresh thyroid tissue but gel electrophoresis demonstrated an absence of normal thyroglobulin from extracts of the goitrous thyroid. This lamb and the other affected lambs of this flock have an inherited defect in thyroglobulin synthesis and it is likely that the respiratory distress was associated with the low levels of thyroid hormone affecting foetal lung development.

摘要:
During an outbreak of suspected botulism in waterfowl on Hamilton Lake an eight year old entire male dog was admitted to a Hamilton veterinary clinic. The dog was unable to stand upon admission and showed a partial lower motor neuron dysfunction characteristic of botulism. Treatment consisted of antibiotics and intensive supportive therapy. Complications resulted in the dog being destroyed ten days after commencement of treatment. Analysis of a serum sample taken antemortem, confirmed the presence ofClostridium botulinumtype C toxin.

摘要:
The epizootiology of equine herpesvirus type 2 (EHV-2) infection was investigated in Thoroughbred foals on a stud farm which in previous years had suffered economic loss due to respiratory disease. Sixteen pairs of foals and their dams were selected for this study and all of the foals became infected with EHV-2 by two to four months of age. These animals responded serologically to the virus infection as detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). EHV-2 infection persisted in these foals for two to six months with constant or intermittent virus recovery. This persistent infection stimulated continuous production of antibodies against EHV-2. As soon as the antibody levels reached their peak at five to six months, the isolation rate of EHV-2 from the nasal cavity of these animals decreased, and eventually by nine months of age virus could no longer be recovered. Respiratory disease was observed in ten of the 16 foals, and two severely affected animals died at two months of age. EHV-2 was isolated from both foals at ante and/or post mortem examination. It is postulated that EHV-2, either as an initiating agent or by means of immunosuppression, caused the respiratory disease observed in these foals.

摘要:
Streptococcus pneumoniae, a bacterium frequently associated with pneumonia in man, was isolated from the spleen, liver, lung and kidney of an Angora goat kid which had died suddenly. Signs of septicaemia were pronounced with widespread petechial haemorrhages on internal organs. Histologically, the spleen and liver were severely congested and necrotic changes were most marked in these organs. The goat kid had been reared as a household pet and the possibility that the goat kid had acquired theStr. pneumoniaefrom a human infection is discussed.
