Six herds of dairy cattle, in which infection had persisted after measures had been employed to eradicate brucellosis, were investigated in detail. One hundred and two animals out of 700 (14.6%) had evidence of the disease from cultural or serological tests. Only 4 infected animals aborted; the remaining 98 animals with brucellosis exhibited no clinical sign of the disease, and 52 were heifers calving for the first time. Sixty-five of the 700 animals (9.3%) produced brucella-infected vaginal discharges at the end of a normal period of gestation, and another 17 (2.4%) were detected only by the brucellosis (Brewer) card test (BCT) or complement fixation test (CFT). All the infected animals were removed from the herds immediately after detection.

The development of a dog:goat species ofSarcocystiswas studied experimentally in goats. Schizogony in vascular endothelium at 18 and 19 days after infection was associated with-pyrexia, anaemia, anorexia, depression and death. Clinical signswere dose-related and doses of 6 × 105or more sporocysts were fatal. Muscle invasion took place before 34 days. At 129 days, sarcocysts were infective for dogs and the life cycle was completed. Sporocysts of this dog:goat species were not infective for sheep.

The results of operating a voluntary ovine brucellosis accreditation programme in 14 stud and 9 commercial flocks in the Manawatu district is reported. From a total of 1992 CF test results there were 47 positive and 14 suspicious reactions; a total of 61 reactions (3.06%). Fifty six of these occurred in rams vaccinated during the previous 12 months, and only one further ram with epididymitis had a suspicious, and then a positive, CF test and is assumed to have had brucellosis (0.05%). One of the remaining three suspicious reactions was confirmed as a false suspicious, and the other two remain unclassified as either true or false. It was concluded the CF test is both highly sensitive and specific, and that the official acceptance of accreditation schemes is an urgent priority for the sheep industry.

A virological survey was carried out on 150 calf faeces from 30 central North Island properties, utilising electron miscroscopic examination of ultracentrifuged faecal pellets. Rotaviruses were detected on three farms, and coronavirus-like particles on two farms.

Febantel [N-2-([2,3-bis-(methoxycarbonyl)-guanidine] 5-(phenylthio)-phenyl)-2-methoxyacetamide] was found to inhibit the embryonic development ofTrichuris mudsandHaemonchus contortusova. After oral treatment ofT.muris-infected mice with 500 mg/kg febantel, the majority of eggs excreted from 31 hours after treatment did not develop into the larval stage. A more pronounced ovacidal effect was shown forH.contortusafter treatment of sheep with low doses of febantel. The embryonic development of eggs had completely stopped from 24 hours after treatment with 2.5 mg/kg febantel. The commercially recommended dose-rate for febantel in sheep is 5 mg/kg.

Histological and radiographic examination of 23 ewe heads has revealed that mandibular osteopathy is a feature of the ovine dental abnormality syndrome described by Bruèreet al.(3)The bone changes consisted of excessive irregular remodelling of bone with osteoporosis. Developmental faults were also demon-strated. The most dramatic of these were dentigerous cysts involving unerupted permanent incisors, although malposition-ing of permanent incisors was also observed.
