摘要:
Moxidectin was demonstrated to have a high efficacy in lambs againstOstertagiaspp. which were resistant to albendazole, levamisole and ivermectin in goats. Moxidectin reduced the number of eggs in faeces by 99.6% and the number of worms found at post-mortem dissection of the lambs by 99.9%. Of the adult worms found in abomasa, 91% were identified asOstertagia circumcinctaand 9% asOstertagia trifurcata.

摘要:
Three serological tests for the diagnosis ofMycobacterium bovisinfection were evaluated on 29 possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) with tuberculosis and on 100 possums from a tuberculosis-free area. An indirect ELISA usingM. bovisculture filtrate as the antigen had a sensitivity of 45% and a specificity of 96%, while an indirect ELISA using aM. bovisspecific antigen (MPB70) had a sensitivity of 21% and a specificity of 98%. A blocking ELISA which utilised a monoclonal antibody against MPB70 had a sensitivity of 28% and a specificity of 99%. Combination of the test results of the three ELISAs resulted in an increase in sensitivity to 51% and a decrease in specificity to 93%. A previous study has shown that possums experimentally infected withM. bovisproduced cellular responses toM. bovisantigens relatively early in the infection, but these responses decreased in the terminal stages of the disease. In contrast, analysis of serological responses in the current study from sequentially collected sera of possums experimentally and naturally infected withM. bovisshowed that antibodv was first detected late in the disease.

摘要:
An analysis was undertaken of 177 veterinary diagnostic case submissions to two North Island and two South Island animal health laboratories for faecal egg count reduction testing in sheep during 1993 to provide some comparative data on the frequency of occurrence of anthelmintic resistance. The results suggest that resistance to anthelmintics in sheep nematodes may be more common in the South Island than the North. In both instances this mainly involved resistance to a single drench type, the benzimidazoles. The data indicated a frequency of occurrence of resistance to benzimidazole anthelmintics of 61 and 72%, to levamisole-type anthelmintics of 29 and 29% and to benzimidazole-levamisole combinations of 11 and 22% for submissions to North and South Island laboratories, respectively. In submissions from the South Island, resistance to benzimidazoles involved infections ofNematodirusspp. alone much more frequently than those from the North.

摘要:
Eighteen helminth-free lambs were randomly allocated to six groups of three. Each lamb was dosed with 3300 infective larvae pooled from two isolates ofNematodirus spathigerknown to be benzimidazole resistant. One lamb from each group was treated with oral ivermectin, one with oral oxfendazole and one left untreated 21 days after infection. All lambs were humanely killed 14 days later and small intestine worm counts performed. NoNematodiruswere found in the ivermectin-treated lambs.Nematodirusnumbers were reduced by 13% in oxfendazole-treated lambs relative to the control lambs.

摘要:
A tiletamine-zolazepam mixture was administered subcutaneously at doses of 2.5 mg/kg, 5.0 mg/kg and 7.5 mg/kg to fifty-nine cats. The response to drug administration, effect on heart rate, pulse quality, respiratory rate and temperature, and intensity and duration of sedation were recorded. As the tiletamine-zolazepam dose was increased, intensity and duration of sedation increased. At the lowest dose. some cats became excited rather than sedated. Heart rate and respiratory rate changed minimally, but body temperature decreased.

摘要:
In case studies of two herds of dairy cattle, a herd of 270 Friesian cows and heifers and a herd of 256 Jersey cows and heifers experienced high death rates and a protracted course of illness when fly ash was broadcast as a fertiliser over the farms at a rate of about 1 tonne per hectare. The onset of weakness, lassitude and diarrhoea in the cattle first appeared within 4–5 days and both fertility and milk fat production fell off dramatically. In the following 7 months, 51 animals died in the Friesian herd and a similar death rate and performance losses occurred in the Jersey herd. Emaciation and hepatic fibrosis were consistently reported from autopsies. Heavy metal poisoning was eliminated from the possible diagnosis. The slags and fly ash used as fertiliser had several features in common. They contained 29–40% calcium as calcium oxide, 15–35 grams of iron per kg, they were all extremely alkaline and concentrations of lead and arsenic were low. The effect of adding fly ash to rumen contentsin vitrowas to raise the pH to greater than 7.2, at which point fermentation was markedly reduced.

摘要:
Hypothyroidism and concurrent sex hormone imbalance associated with alopecia was diagnosed in a Syear-old entire male Miniature Poodle. The dog had a 3-year history of alopecia, seborrhoea and recurrent superficial pyoderma. Abnormal thyrotropin releasing hormone stimulation test results supported a diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Partial hair regrowth occurred after interstitial cell tumours, which were present in both testicles, were removed by castration. Complete hair regrowth, however, occurred only after thyroid hormone supplementation. This case highlighted difficulties which may be encountered when internretina serum hormone concentrations and endocrine function tests.

摘要:
Suspected photosensitisation occurred in three groups of lambs grazing birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatusC.V. Grasslands Goldie). In one group, sucking lambs aged about 10 weeks, grazing birdsfoot trefoil, developed skin lesions while lambs of a similar age and from the same flock grazing lucerne (Medicago sativa) or a mixed sward of both species showed no signs of photosensitisation. Affected lambs had lesions on their backs and ears. In a few animals the tips of the ears were shortened by 2–3 cm. In the affected lambs, serum liver enzymes (gamma-glutamyl- transferase, glutamate dehydrogenase), bilirubin and serum Vitamin B12levels were within the normal range. At necropsy, no significant pathological changes were detected in the liver and histological changes in the skin were consistent with primary photosensitisation. In the second group, three of 80 weaned lambs grazing the same birdsfoot trefoil at a restricted intake were affected in the same manner as the first group. In the third group, 15 animals from 28 sets of sucking twin lambs were also affected. In only two sets of twins were both lambs affected. None of the ewes grazing with the lambs in the first or third groups showed any clinical signs of photosensitisation.

摘要:
The first case of hereditary chondrodysplasia (“spider syndrome”) in a New Zealand Suffolk lamb of American origin is described. An imported Suffolk ram of American origin was test mated to 27 of his daughters. In one of the resulting progeny, found dead at birth, a diagnosis of hereditary chondrodysplasia was made based on the typical radiographical abnormalities of multiple centres of ossification in the anconeal process of the ulna, vertebrae, sternebrae and pelvic bones. These changes were confirmed histopathologically.
