Recent research on the muscular and nervous changes which occur in idiopathic equine laryngeal hemiplegia has indicated that many of the traditional concepts of the aetiology of this disease are erroneous. In light of the new knowledge gained, the various predispositions and possible causes of laryngeal hemiplegia are discussed, and it is suggested that the underlying mechanism of axonal damage in this neuropathy of horses may be related to abnormal energy metabolism in the axon.

A comparative study was made of the serological response of rams to an inactivatedBrucella ovissalinein-oil vaccine‡ administered either once or twice by either the subcutaneous or the intraperitoneal route. The serological response of rams to two spaced doses of vaccine was more consistent and more persistent than when a single dose of vaccine was used. The rise in titre was more rapid and the final titre of greater magnitude when the subcutaneous route of administration was used in comparison with the intraperitoneal route. On a serological basis, the most satisfactory vaccination technique investigated consisted of two subcutaneous injections of vaccine administered ten weeks apart. The least satisfactory technique was a single intraperitoneal injection.

A new approach to the interpretation of faecal egg counts using a simple “formula”, is described. It is suggested that adoption of this procedure may enable the likely level and frequency distribution of strongyle worm burdens (Nematodirusexcluded) in young sheep flocks to be estimated. The potential relevance of this information to the diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasitism is discussed.

The performance of a method of estimating the worm burdens in young sheep flocks, by applying egg count data to a simple “formula” was evaluated on four farms in the Manawatu. On all farms there was a good fit between the estimated flock worm burden using this method and those obtained from worm counts. It is suggested that this procedure is likely to be successful in providing a reasonable approximation of the flock worm profile when 10 to 15 egg counts on randomly selected members are performed.
