摘要:
A survey was carried out to determine the prevalence of Yersiniae in wild passerines in the lower half of the North island of New Zealand over a period of 12 months. Samples of soil, water and foliage were also collected. Out of a total of 1370 avian samples, only two strains ofY. pseudotuberculosiswere isolated and a total of 98 strains of environmental yersiniae were identified, includingY. enterocoliticabiotype 1a,Y. frederiksenii,Y. kristenseniiandY. intermedia. No strains ofY. pseudotuberculosiswere isolated from 1032 non-avian samples collected, which included 100 samples taken from wild mammals. From the non-avian samples, 51 strains of environmental Yersiniae were identified, of which the relative prevalence ofYersinia enterocolitica, biotype 1a,Y. frederiksenii,Y. kristenseniiandY. intermediawas similar to that in the rural passerines. The prevalence of Yersiniae in soil samples was greater in rural areas than in urban areas of the survey region. In both rural and urban passerine populations, the prevalence of Yersiniae was greater in the winter and early summer than at other times of the vear.

摘要:
The level of non-specific reactions found in the brucellosis serology of ruminants in New Zealand was very low until July 1992. This changed when, in an export consignment of 1071 deer, 35% reacted in theBrucella abortustube agglutination test with titres varying from 50 to 200 IU. The reactors were also positive in the Rose-Bengal agglutination test and most of them reacted in the complement fixation test with titres varying from 10 to 80 IU.Yersinia enterocolitica0:9 was later isolated from one deer of this consignment. It was the first isolate of this serotype recovered in New Zealand from an animal. Shortly after, false reactors occurred more frequently than before in sera fromBrucella abortusaccredited free cattle herds. As the involvement ofYersinia enterocolitica0:9 was suspected in these cases, faecal samples from reactors and in-contact animals were cultured for this organism.Yersinia enterocolitica0:9 was isolated from nine of 19 herds showing one or more falseBrucella abortusseroreactions.

摘要:
Twenty-four Thoroughbred and twelve Standardbred racehorses aged between 2 and 6 years, presented for reported poor racing performance, underwent clinical exercise testing. During the last 10 s of exercise at each speed throughout an incremental speed exercise test on a treadmill inclined at a 10% slope, samples of arterial blood and expired gases were collected. Maximum oxygen uptake and the partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide in arterial blood were determined. These values were compared between the two breeds of horses and also with reference to cytological findings of bronchoalveolar lavage samples, including neutrophil, erythrocyte and haemosiderophage percentage and the total nucleated cell concentration. The results revealed an inverse relationship (Spearman R = -0.45, p<0.05) between the total nucleated cell count in bronchoalveolar lavage samples and arterial oxygen partial pressure during exercise at 11 m.s-1. This result suggests that subclinical pulmonary disease may be a more important cause of poor racing performance than previously thought. Also of note was a positive correlation (Spearman R = 0.50, p<0.05) between maximum oxygen untake and the percentage of erythrocytes.

摘要:
A blunt, non-missile head injury inflicted by a non-penetrating captive bolt pistol in cattle at slaughter resulted in immediate loss of consciousness, a depressed fracture of the frontal bone and widespread subarachnoid haemorrhage, particularly beneath the impact site, in the temporal and frontal lobes, and around the brainstem. There was also invariably petechial haemorrhage in the basal ganglia and thalamus. The large concussive force applied to the cranium by the stunner was probably responsible for rendering the animal insensible and the vascular damage produced by this force and the sudden ventrocaudal acceleration of the brain after impact. These findings supported the use of this mode of stunning, followed by exsanguination, as an acceptable form of slaughter of cattle in abattoirs.

摘要:
Disorientation, muscle fasciculations and weakness seen in a 12-year-old neutered female domestic shorthaired cat were attributed to hypoglycaemia associated with a large hepatoma. Glucagon tolerance tests on this cat and a healthy cat showed that their plasma glucose concentrations increased and decreased at about the same rate. Plasma insulin concentrations in the healthy cat increased and decreased in parallel with the plasma glucose concentration. In the affected cat, plasma insulin concentrations increased initially but decreased more rapidly. Reflecting these observations, the amended insulin to glucose ratios in the affected cat were much lower than those of the healthy cat, until the 4-hour sample. Serum somatostatin, somatomedin and gastrin concentrations were measured but no conclusions as to pathogenesis of the hypoglycaemia could be made. The alterations in insulin secretion in the affected cat suggested that altered hormonal control of glucose homeostasis mav have occurred with this tumour.

摘要:
A case of primary intraosseous fibrosarcoma of the left femur in a cat was diagnosed at necropsy following 9 months of managing a fracture of the same bone. Case features were those of probable pathological fracture, fracture repair and ultimate lysis of all but a fragment of the distal femoral epiphysis. Histology revealed closely packed whorls of fibroblasts typical of fibrosarcoma. This neoplasm is rare in the cat.

摘要:
Conjunctival swabs collected in 1991-92 from 333 pedigree and non-pedigree cats were tested for the presence ofChlamydiaspp. antigen using an ELISA antigen kit. Forty (18.4%) of the 217 samples from cats with conjunctivitis were positive. Seven (6%) of 116 samples from cats which were in contact with cats with conjunctivitis but which showed no clinical signs at the time of sample collection were positive. Positive-testing cats were frequently from multi-cat households.Chlamydiaspp. is present and associated with conjunctivitis in cats in New Zealand. Infection may occur concurrently with viral diseases. Feline calicivirus was recovered from 27 (21 with conjunctivitis) of 37 cats tested in five catteries. Four cats (with conjunctivitis) were FIV-positive.
