Hoof growth and wear studies were conducted on ten spring-calving cows over 12 months. The rates of hoof wall growth and wear were lower in autumn and winter than during spring and summer. Both were greater in 2-year-old than in mature cows (p <0.05). Sole wear occurred most rapidly along the abaxial edge of the weight-bearing surface, less quickly in the toe and heel areas, and most slowly in the mid-sole region. Both hoof wall wear and sole wear were greater in lateral digits than in medial digits (p < 0.01).

Two synthetic pyrethroid (cypermethrin) based “pour-on” insecticide formulations, with highcis/transisomer ratios (80:20) but differing in their respective active ingredient concentrations and solvent component(s), were applied to sheep infested with the biting-louse,Bovicola ovis. All treated sheep were penned with louse-infested sheep 9, 12 and 15 weeks after the insecticide was applied. The 2% cypermethrin formulation achieved a higher level of control than the 1.25% cypermethrin formulation at each challenge interval when applied 12 weeks after shearing. The 2% cypermethrin formulation provided 97-100% control of lice from 4 to 16 weeks after application on sheep shorn 6 or 12 weeks prior to treatment. The 1.25% cypermethrin formulation provided 85% control of lice 4 weeks after application on sheep shorn 12 weeks prior to treatment, the level of control increasing to a maximum of 100% by week 9, and declining thereafter. The 2% cypermethrin formulation may provide a better level of control in long-woolled sheep than 1.25% cypermethrin, by compensating for the diluent effect of lipid.

Five Devon cattle with suspected ceroid-lipofuscinosis and aged between 19 and 39 months of age were humanely slaughtered and subjected to post-mortem examination. There was severe atrophy of the cerebrum, particularly of the occipital cortex. Microscopy also showed severe atrophy of the retina with complete loss of photoreceptor cells, even in the youngest animal examined. Histopathologically the disease was characterised by accumulation of a fluorescent lipopigment in neurones, including those of the retina and a severe astrocytosis. The disease, which is characterised by the accumulation of subunit c of mitochondrial ATP synthase, is similar to that extensively described in South Hampshire sheep except that the retinal lesions were more severe. In contrast, tremors were not noted in the cattle. The clinical history and similarity to the disease in sheep and other species indicated inheritance was as an autosomal recessive trait.

Osteogenesis imperfecta and skin fragility occurred in about 50 New Zealand Romney lambs born in a flock of 450 ewes. Affected lambs had soft bones and multiple intrauterine bone fractures. Long bones had a thickened diaphysis with almost complete absence of a medullary cavity. Other consistent gross findings were moderate brachynathia inferior, subcutaneous oedema, marked joint laxity, dark blue sclera and small pink teeth. Histopathologic and ultra- structural changes were consistent with a defect in collagen production by fibroblasts. DNA finger-printing was used to identify which of the five rams used in the flock was carrying the genetic defect. The disease was inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and was considered to be a new mutation in the testicular germ cell lines of this ram.

Japanese quails were inoculated orally with 1 × 1010colony-forming units ofSalmonella enteritidisphage type 4 isolated from chicks to obtain information concerningS. enteritidisinfection and egg transmission. The inoculation resulted in a bacteraemic infection with seeding of the liver, spleen, intestine, peritoneum, ovule, ovary and oviduct. Some infected birds showed diarrhoea, ruffled feathers, depression, loss of appetite and death. However, most infected birds remained clinically normal with normal egg production.Salmonella enteritidiswas isolated from the albumen of 7, yolk of 15, shell of 13, and shell membrane of 15 of 164 eggs. The experiment suggests thatS. enteritidisphage type 4 is invasive for Japanese quails and the infected eggs laid byS. enteritidisinfected quails are probably the result of transovarian infection.

During the springs of the 1990-91 and 1991-92 dairying seasons, 103 cases of uterine prolapse in dairy cows were treated and then followed to determine the survival rate and the pregnancy rate of the remaining cows. It was found that 19 (18.4%) cows died within 24 hours of treatment and a further 16 (15.5%) died or were lost to the study during the course of the season. The 68 cows that remained were mated, and of these 53 (77.9%) were found to be pregnant and six (8.8%) aborted later. No cows suffered a repeat prolapse during the season. Cases were seen in all age groups, with the highest incidence in this study occurring in the 4- year-olds.

In a nationwide survey carried out during 1990-91 of more than 5800 dogs to detect antibodies againstLeptospira interrogansserovarscopenhageni, ballumandcanicola, only one weak reactor against serovarcanicolawas found. Reactors of varying titre were found against serovarballumin 0.7% of dogs tested, indicating sporadic infection with this serovar. Reactors (0.9%) to serovarcopenhagenicame mainly from the Waikato, Northland and the Auckland region. This was in agreement with the reported occurrence of the clinical syndrome and with the results of a smaller survey in urban Auckland, in which more than 5% of dogs tested were seropositive to serovarcopenhageni.

A sudden outbreak of perinatal mortality in piglets occurred between May and August 1991 in a 60-sow piggery near Palmerston North. None of the piglets born to the 30 sows which farrowed during this period of time survived more than a few days and all live-born piglets appeared weak. Three newborn live piglets were humanely killed and at necropsy had marked diffuse subcutaneous oedema, the only gross and histological anomalies detected in the extensive range of tissues examined. Serological tests of sows were negative for leptospiral, porcine herpes viral (Aujeszky's), porcine parvoviral, encephalomyocarditis viral andBrucelh suisinfections. No viral agents were recovered on cell culture from pooled piglet tissues. Liver selenium levels were normal, but Vitamin E values (0.8, 0.8 and 0.6 μmol/kg respectively) seemed low according to the recently established range of 0.9-1.4 μmol/kg for normal unsuckled piglets in New Zealand(1). No Vitamin E/selenium deficiency syndromes had been recognised previously in this herd.
