摘要:
This paper offers ideas for graduate study in physical education teacher education (PETE). It discusses professional versus scientific degree options, and argues that pedagokinetics (the art and science of teaching movement) should be the central focus of the curriculum for both practitioners and researchers. To overcome major obstacles to academic excellence, a problem-solving agenda is outlined for the PETE professorate, with emphasis on critical issues such as (a) governance and control of teacher education, (b) the proper location of PETE units at educational institutions, (c) regional networks of research universities, undergraduate colleges, and local school districts, (d) faculty competence and differential graduate orientations, (e) the shortage of exemplary teachers and teaching in physical education, (f) recruitment of bright graduate students for PETE, and (g) cultivation of a knowledge base to support practice and research in pedagogical physical education. In addition, the paper reports on a new generation of scholars at work, for over a decade, to increase PETE'S credibility with other physical education disciplines as well as the generic teacher education enterprise.

摘要:
This article speculates about the future of graduate study in pedagogy of physical education. The argument is based on demographic trends, historical developments in the field of physical education, empirical evidence of effective teaching, and experiences with graduate courses that appear to have been successful. The article concludes that the demand for graduate programs, the mechanisms for delivering them, and the content of such programs in teacher education in physical education portend a bright future for the quality of teaching in physical education in America. If this is to be achieved, new efforts at defining the focus of the field of physical education must be undertaken.

摘要:
Teacher education programs in physical education have deemphasized the subject matter of physical education and instead have defined the profession in terms of the processes and procedures of pedagogy. Evidence in support of this claim is presented in a review of literature in teacher education and curriculum models in physical education. Among the many reasons for this emphasis is the belief that generic information-processing skills can be acquired without concern for content or subject matter. In particular, the early literature in cognition sought to identify problem solving, thinking, and reasoning skills that could be learned and then applied to any domain of knowledge no matter how different or complex. The more recent literature from cognition, artificial intelligence, and education shows that we cannot assume the existence of powerful generic information-processing skills that exist independent of content. Instead, it is increasingly evident that we must find ways to integrate content and process throughout the educational process. This is especially important in planning teacher education programs.

摘要:
Enhancement of“social vision and moral understanding”is currently an important agenda for professional education in higher education. Furthermore, sociocultural studies of sport, exercise, and the body have gained academic respectability in the last two decades, and presently numerous scholars in the traditional social science and humanities disciplines are engaged in research focusing on these phenomena. Sport, exercise, and the body are of central concern to physical education. Furthermore, one of physical education's goals is the preparation of professionals to provide services centered on exercise and sport. Given this trend in higher education and the focus of our field, it seems important to consider devoting increased attention to sociocultural studies of sport, exercise, and the body within physical education. Maintenance of a small but excellent cadre of sociocultural scholars in physical education is called for, and an exchange system for outstanding sociocultural graduate students is suggested as a means of assuring continuation of such a cadre.

摘要:
Numerous and much needed scientific and scholarly improvements have occurred in physical education since the 1960s. The increased specialization, while absolutely necessary for advancing knowledge, has at times been accompanied by the attitude that only certain subdisciplinary areas are important. In general, history and social science areas have been neglected within departments of physical education. Many leading historians have looked to other social sciences, and occasionally to the biological sciences, for insights into the past; an increasing number have written on topics that fall within sport and even within physical education history. The tendency to assign history classes in departments of physical education to faculty who are not themselves productive researchers is criticized. Because so few departments of physical education offer graduate research degrees in history, this subdisciplinary area is in jeopardy. An inadequate understanding of the intellectual origins of professional physical education may also contribute to what seems to be an inability to resolve the specialization/fragmentation issue.

摘要:
The author argues in a personalized statement that exercise science graduate degree programs ought to include attention to the questions of how people develop and maintain persistent exercise habits, and how health fitness professionals can help them do so. Recommendations are made for two-tiered graduate preparation in exercise science: master's degrees that focus on preparation of health fitness professionals trained in human interaction skills as well as exercise physiological bases for conducting fitness programs, and doctoral degrees that continue to focus on preparation of researchers and faculty members trained to expand the knowledge base in exercise physiology and to prepare both the new master's and doctoral candidates though graduate education programs.

摘要:
The graduate level sport management cumculum must go beyond the level of providing technical competencies—it must also orient graduates to using competencies in the fulfillment of management tasks. The sport management curriculum should also emphasize the unusual and sometimes unique aspects of managing a sport organization. Sport should be studied in relation to other industries. An ideal curriculum revolves around four components of knowledge: core knowledge, functional applications across segments, supplemental electives, and segment specializations, including internships. Graduate level sport management curricula should produce managers, not entry-level technicians.

摘要:
The direction of graduate education in sport psychology has changed considerably since its emergence as a recognizable subdiscipline within exercise and sport science in the late 1960s. This paper describes (a) the structure of current sport psychology specializations within graduate programs based on a survey of 33 programs with sport psychology specializations in the United States, (b) trends in sport psychology graduate education, and (c) concerns regarding the future of graduate education in sport psychology in terms of coursework, research, and applied service provision.
