摘要:
Since the 1960s, numerous articles, special features, symposia, and conferences have raised perceptive and often troubling questions about the present condition and future directions of the field. In the 1980s, the debates reached a crescendo with issues about specialization, fragmentation, professional versus academic, and what should comprise the academic core. Any profession should periodically evaluate itself; it is now time, however, to marshall our efforts and concentrate on what ourcollectivestrengths are—or should be. It is suggested herein that useful lessons might be gleaned from an overview of American medicine at the turn of the century and recent discussions concerning medical education. Medicine combines both clinical and academic/scientific studies and draws upon knowledge ranging from the molecular to the macro levels. American medicine and medical education struggled through uncertainties 100 years ago that are not unlike those that physical education has been involved in for the last 3 decades. To achieve first-class academic and professional respectability, however, more physical education faculty must become producers (rather than consumers) of scholarly and scientific knowledge. Moreover, our professional organization must devote greater attention to fostering research, the foundation upon which the respectability of a profession rests.

摘要:
Western civilization has a philosophical tradition based upon dualisms and dichotomies. Among these dichotomies is one that separates the mind and the body. In an area of study and practice such as physical education, this separation of the human into two parts has implications for our teaching, research, curricula, and even the way we work with people. The purpose of this article is to review the philosophic history of the mind and body with reference to the implications this dualism has had in our profession. This is followed by a discussion of a nondualistic, embodied view of humans and how that nondualistic view might call for (a) changes in the way we work with people, and (b) integrative study and analysis in order to lead to a more complete understanding of human movement.

摘要:
Proposals promising integration have been offered as solutions to problems of faculty specialization and fragmentation. Despite their merits, these proposals may be premature or even misguided. A prior need is to analyze the roots and processes of specialization and fragmentation. One kind of analysis begins with the relationship among professionalization, problem setting, and paradigmatic communities. In addition to emphasizing the import of institutional and societal contexts, this analytical frame of reference calls attention to issues of power, authority, resources, and prestige in higher education. Specialization and fragmentation are endemic in higher education, and proposals aimed at integration must accommodate both.

摘要:
For operational purposes, physical development is characterized using a multidimensional hierarchical model. Optimal physical development is described as a combination of good physical fitness and a high level of skill development. Physical fitness has multiple subdimensions of its own. Developing each subdimension requires regular physical activity, which is not likely to occur without the collaboration of many, including the individual, family, friends, schools, community, and private agencies.

摘要:
This essay focuses on the effects of the recent subdisciplinary research emphasis in physical education scholarship on whole-person issues such as personal and social development in school- and agency-based physical education programs. It is argued, first, that recent social problems have accelerated the need for scholarly attention to the whole person in physical education and, second, that this research emphasis has responded by beginning to clarify and validate various personal and social development approaches in physical education. However, these results are not, for the most part, finding their way into practice; a different approach to scholarship is required to augment current lines of research. This approach, which emphasizes the interplay of theory/research and practice, is more likely to bridge the gap between theory and practice and to encourage integration among the subdisciplines. In the process, pressing social problems that now constitute much of the context for practice will be addressed.

摘要:
This paper identifies subdisciplinary fragmentation, academic elitism, and negative stereotyping as obstacles impeding the process of collaboration among different groups within the profession of physical education. It provides examples of projects in which academics interacted among themselves and with physical education teachers, classroom teachers, and volunteer coaches. To the extent that these interactions reduce fragmentation and allow academics and practitioners to act as equal partners in the process of problem setting and problem solving, they are offered as ways to“connect”in physical education and as a basis for professional integration.

摘要:
Despite being inherently rewarding and a major stimulus for many athletes' continued involvement in sport, there is a dearth of research concerning peak moments in sport. Methodological and definitional problems are abundant, and confusion surrounds the categorization of such instances. This paper examines four models related to peak moments, with particular emphasis placed on the Privette and Bundrick model. Peak experience, peak performance, and flow, which form a central component in this model, are discussed in detail. Similar and distinctive characteristics of peak moments in sport are then discussed. Finally, personal factors influencing the ability to experience peak moments, as well as optimal conditions for facilitating such moments, are reviewed. Particular attention is devoted to how one can minimize interference with these experiences.

摘要:
This paper examines the decision-making process and the influences operating in the decision to return an injured player to full playing status. The rights and obligations of the athlete, coach, and team physician are explicated in terms of autonomy, paternalism, and nonmaleficence. It is argued that no single party can be objective enough to render a decision in light of the vested interest and coercions that are operating. The informed-consent model is offered as a first step in the amelioration of a problem directly attributable to lack of a clear policy among sport governing bodies.
