Ernest Boyer (1928–1995) delivered the following keynote presentation to the 1995 conference of the National Association for Physical Education in Higher Education in Palm Springs. In his presentation, Dr. Boyer revisited his reportScholarship Reconsideredand outlined the general framework for the follow-up report,Scholarship Assessed. InScholarship Assessed, Dr. Boyer proposes a set of guidelines that would put into practice the theories articulated inScholarship Reconsidered.

Ernest Boyer's Scholarship Reconsidered recognizes and redefines three forms of scholarship (discovery, integration, and application) and acknowledges that the scholarship of discovery has maintained a central place in major research universities. Boyer's fourth form of scholarship, teaching, and its role in the modem university are challenges that the field of physical education must accept. It is incumbent on physical education professionals to reconsider the value we place on teaching and the manner in which institutional values, expectations, and practices impact the retention and promotion of faculty.

The twin premises of this paper were clearly articulated by Ernest Boyer inScholarship Reconsidered(1990). Boyer asserted that the“connectedness”of scholarship is the quality that makes it“authentic”(p. 19). Furthermore, he suggested that it is the responsibility of the university to“help students better understand the interdependent nature of our world”(p. 77). The implementation of these principles in kinesiology entails a reconceptualization of cumculurn structure, scholarship, and professional preparation. At one level this paper is an examination of how the curriculum and scholarship might be structured to promote connectedness within the university. The other purpose of this paper is to extrapolate the nature of the interdependence of kinesiology and society through an analysis of the professional challenges that await our graduates beyond the walls of the academy.

摘要:
The current scholarship model in higher education has been conceived, produced, and reproduced in the image of the dominant culture. The values, behaviors, and expectations for the academy have been forged by a university culture that is“relatively homogeneous by race, ethnicity, and gender.”Although ethnic racial minorities are outnumbered by both white females and males, white males, by virtue of their numbers in rank and other positions of power, are the dominant members of the academic community. Individuals whose characteristics differ from those of the dominant group members are less likely to receive recognition, sponsorship, favorable procedural evaluation, or positive commentary on their scholarship. The purpose of this paper is to discuss considerations for a more inclusive scholarship in the academy.

The following is a one-act play containing a dialogue between two physical education and sport science professors (Metzler, 1994) as they travel back from the 1995 NAPEHE Conference,“Beyond Scholarship Reconsidered: The Mosaic of Scholarship in Physical Education.”The play's dialogue is drawn from three major sources: the authors' biographies, their personal opinions regarding Scholarship Reconsidered, and the published professional literature in physical education and the sport sciences. The characters represent two cohorts in faculty: those who are early in their careers and those who have canied out the first half of their careers under the current model of scholarship in higher education.

The role of scholarship in physical education in the liberal arts college is discussed, placing it within the context of Ernest Boyer's (1990) landmark publication,Scholarship Reconsidered: Priorities for the Professoriate. Boyer forces physical educators to consider the problems and issues that confront the academy and the role of physical education in it. Pondering the specific issue of scholarship in physical education is especially appropriate in light of the debates that have recently raged over the place and priority of scholarship in the academy. Particular attention is paid to the role of scholarship in the liberal arts institutions that house physical education.

If one acknowledges that scholarship comes in many shapes and forms, and if one agrees with Boyer's argument that it is time to reconsider scholarship in light of the role of faculty members within departments, colleges, and universities, the next logical step then is to see if Boyer's principles can be effectively applied in a university setting. At the 1995 NAPEHE conference, Boyer acknowledged that the next step, as indicated by the title of the Carnegie Foundation's forthcoming sequelScholarship Assessed, is to identify ways to fairly and equitably evaluate faculty scholarship within the context of the professoriate in general, and in higher education institutions in particular. The authors argue the case for differential application of standards within and among universities, based upon the diversity of missions and goals. Following that, examples are given for how Boyer's classifications have been applied to promotion and tenure standards at one comprehensive land grant university in the midwest. Administrator and faculty (new and old) commentary provide sup port for the new standards.

The current reform movement in higher education involves efforts to alter the missions of universities and the forms of scholarship necessq to accomplish these missions. The authors explore the changing contexts in the professoriate based on this redefinition of scholarship and cite the impact of changes on faculty roles and responsibilities, faculty socialization, and faculty evaluation. They indicate that the current reform movement will lead to significant changes in the way faculty work Department faculty will be given the autonomy to determine the mission of the department, the kinds of scholarship needed to fulfill that mission, and how to evaluate scholarship in their discipline. Formalized, structured socialization processes will be needed to provide consistent formal and informal messages to faculty regarding their changing roles and responsibilities, especially since individual faculty may have very different roles and responsibilities. Faculty will work in interdisciplinary, collaborative groups to bring together the knowledge bases needed to solve current societal problems.

Sport, by its very nature, produces and reveals inequalities in terms of physicality and athletic performance. In social terms, however, sport has often been considered the great socialleveller. This paper considers the production and reproduction of social inequality in sport in regard to the development of ideas and research about social inequality in the sociology of sport. Specifically, inequality in sport is considered in terms of the progression fromreflectiontoreproductiontoresistancetheses and the progression fromcategoricaltodistributivetorelationallevels of analysis. The paper concludes with a consideration of some ways in which sport may be involved in the production of social equality.
