摘要:
Setting motor performance standards has long been a process of interest to physical educators. Theoretical advances in the measurement technology appropriate for standard-setting, however, have occurred only in the last decade. The first portion of this paper is devoted to a discussion of issues in setting standards and a brief review of procedures for standard-setting. In the latter section, gender differences in motor performance are examined and the impact of these differences on standard-setting is considered.

摘要:
Although too few physical education scholars have given priority to the formulation of curriculum theory, genuine progress has been made in the past quarter of a century. Recent efforts in physical education theory building are reviewed within the overall context of general curriculum theory and in historical perspective. Special attention is focused on relationships between curriculum and instruction. A selected model for physical education curricular decision-making illustrates the process of relating a physical education curriculum theory to general curriculum theory, the need for adaptation to differing value orientations, and the nature of the impact of curiculum theory on instructional decisions.

摘要:
The subject of this essay is graduate study in physical education. Rather than discuss the conditionofgraduate study, the paper described some conditionsforgraduate study. For graduate programs to be genuine graduate programs, certain conditions must be present—no matter the particular model of graduate study in operation. At least four such conditions are needed: academic quality, time to fiddle, a baggy idea of truth, and a sense of community. Each of these conditions is described in turn. In the end, these four combine to make legitimate graduate studies in physical education possible and necessary. They are what bring graduate programs to or keep them in a healthy state of repair.

摘要:
The reconceptualization of sex role classification to include psychological androgyny is presented. An explanation of this concept is followed by a summary of related research and a critique of instruments which purport to assess sex role orientation. The implications of the results of sex role research for athletics as well as future directions in such research are discussed. The discussion centers on the difficulties encountered in the implementation of the theoretical construct of androgyny to the athletic setting.

摘要:
Physical education has been a stronghold of sex role stereotyping in this country from its roots to the present. Assumptions about sex differences have led to differential program philosophy, structure, and content. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 was intended to provide equal opportunities for males and females to develop skills in the full range of activities. The implementation of Title IX, however, has not yet satisfactorily addressed the underlying stereotypes which still perpetuate disparate treatment and opportunities. Professional preparation programs must provide direct attention to the potential sources of sex role stereotyping within program design and to the ways to prevent their perpetuation.

摘要:
The premise that“sport builds character”is often heard but is rarely subjected to careful scrutiny. When the role of aggression at the highest levels of sport in North America is considered, serious doubt is cast upon the sporting process's ability to build character in the sense of enhancing moral excellence; this seems to be the case, at least, in the contact sports of boxing, hockey, and football. Prevailing attitudes within the entire North American sporting milieu regarding aggression need to be further investigated and delineated; once these are more definitively ascertained, more can then be hypothesized about sport and character-building.

摘要:
Just as the 1960s was a transitional decade of far-reaching significance in American culture, the 1960s was also a time of major changes in the history of sports fiction. Several of the sports novels of the sixties reflected changes in and were perhaps motivated by socid change in America. During this decade, the dominance of baseball in fiction was broken. Updike'sRabbit, Run(1960), for example, initiated a minor interlude of basketball fiction. More importantly, the year 1968 marked a major turning point in sports fiction through novels by Frederick Exley, Robert Coover, and Gary Cartwright. After 1968, writers turned primarily to football in their novels, but baseball stories enjoyed some popularity as a result of the seventies' interest in nostalgia.
