摘要:
The supply-demand characteristics of the market for graduate education and the increased need for professional credentialing have led to a lowering of standards over the past 25 years. The master's degree is often a meaningless compilation of courses. The doctorate is too often less than a quality, research degree. Universities have developed many mechanisms for trying to maintain standards within graduate programs. The common denominator of effective quality control mechanisms is that they require the student to“go public”with hislher performances, thus opening those performances to the scrutiny of a wider community of scholars.

摘要:
This paper discusses the impact of the mentoring role of faculty on fostering a quality educational experience for graduate students. Although potentially significant graduate students naturally gravitate to work with significant faculty, it is the mentoring role of the advisor that allows the student's potential to be realized. Clues to the impact of this mentoring role are gleaned from Zuckerman's (1977) analysis of American Nobel Prize laureates. To promote a quality advisor–student relationship, departments need to look beyond the student and considerations of the norms and regulations of entrance and ongoing program criteria. One necessary and very significant precursor will be the presence of quality faculty.

摘要:
Published rankings of graduate departments, programs, and faculties play an important role in American higher education. Rankings serve as a measure of prestige, and prestige in higher education is very important, especially as it relates to career patterns and career opportunities. The purpose of this paper is to identify the most pertinent and controversial issues surrounding prestige rankings in graduate physical education, and examine their importance and consequences. Appropriate research and related literature are presented and examined, with conclusions, implications, and suggestions being offered as results.

摘要:
The demand for accountability in higher education has led to the popularization of ranking systems to evaluate graduate programs in physical education. Rankings by experts in the field have been of graduate programs as a whole, yet the programs of study, background of graduate students, and the young faculty are highly specialized and diversified. Rankings of entire graduate programs of an institution can be entirely inaccurate when they are made by“experts”who have either a general physical education background or a specialized preparation in another field. In this manuscript an evaluation system is proposed that utilizes an AAHPERD-sanctioned evaluation team comprised of experts from physical education associations and other scholarly societies. If graduate program evaluation is to be published and used by administrators, the system used should attend to the diversity of specializations and the credentials of those conducting the evaluation.

摘要:
Is the degree of specdimtion and fragmentation in physical education threatening its future? Does specialization necessarily lead to fragmentation? Data are presented to define the degree of speckhation that is occurring in graduate preparation. These data are used to infer how fragmentation may be happening. The thematic nature of sport science is suggested as a means to allow needed specialization without producing scholars who are so narrow in scope that fragmentation of the field occurs. In particular, the need to develop consistent terminology is stressed so that we may communicate effectively among ourselves and with others.

摘要:
The purpose of graduate education in physical education is proposed to be the“cultivation of rationality.”Rationality is characterized by open-mindedness, the ability to respond to novel situations, and the ability to go beyond past procedures for solving problems. It is suggested that many current graduate programs do not focus on rationality, however, and instead reflect an obsession with developing systematicity in thinking (the ordering of concepts into neat and tidy structures). This commitment to systematicity is identified as a contributing factor in the continued fragmentation of the field as individuals within each specialization adopt their own structures for inquiry. The study of the philospohy of science is proposed as one option for reversing this trend to fragmentation, as it would require graduate students to become more philosophical (reflective) in their thinking even as they become more scientific (extensive).

摘要:
The extent of specialization that exists among graduate students, faculty, and program of physical education was explored, particularly as it relates to published rankings of doctoral programs and other sources. Comparisons were made among data obtained from a questionnaire constructed by the investigators, theGold Book: Directory of Physical Educators in Higher Education 1982–84, and two unpublished reports for the Research Council/Consortium. In addition, comparisons were made with results from other published sources. The graduate programs appeared to be meeting departmental employment needs, with the newly appointed faculty members having specializations consistent with the most prevalent departmental research specializations. Graduate programs were also shown to be fragmented and specialized in multidimensional aspects. As one might expect, the largest proportion of graduate programs and faculty specializations are in the areas of exercise physiology, administration, and professional preparation. However, the dissimilarity in the graduate programs was so diverse that evaluations and comparisons on global scales appear to be useless.

摘要:
Doctoral dissertations reflect academic specialization in physical education in terms of both graduate programs and authors' future academic orientations. This research project examined specialization as reflected in virtually all of the dissertations written in physical education between 1964 and 1983. Through sequential matching of listings inDissertation Abstracts Interntioml, Completed Research in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, and American Doctoral Dissertations, abstracts of 5,344 physical education dissertations were identified and subsequently coded. Selected results included the following: (a) functional effects was the most common academic specialty, (b) the distribution of dissertations among specializations across time changed minimally, (c) the most common academic specialty for DA, EdD, and PED degrees was program development, but the most common specialty for PhD degrees was functional effects, and (d) there was no association between specialties and doctoral program prestige. The results are discussed within the context of the field of physical education in higher education.

摘要:
This study examined the nature and extent of specialized study offered in doctoral programs in U.S. universities during 1985. On the basis of information supplied from representatives of 61 programs, curricula were positioned on a continuum from highly specialized to generalist. Most doctoral programs were classified either as highly or moderately specialized (42% and 43%, respectively), while 15% were classified as generalist programs. Overall, 26 areas of doctoral study were identified and collapsed into five“generic”categories. One of the categories, exercise science, accounted for more than half of the doctoral programs offered during the reporting year, education-related specializations accounted for approximately 30%, and sociocultural studies approximately 12%. Among highly specialized programs, the majority of students graduated with specializations in exercise physiology (35%). The implications of these data for the future of the field are discussed.
