摘要:
This lecture explores the content and context of the discourse of“a new world order”because this discourse has become part of the public discourse. Meanings about the new world order are part of a“contested terrain,”and as such they are part of a larger component of political, economic, and cultural conflicts, the outcomes of which are not preordained to favor the governing elites and monied interests. Scholars and educators, besides being a part of a large professional network, are citizens as well, and social conditions and problems affect everyone. Definitions and proposed trajectories of a new world order need to be problematized to provide impetus for transcending the classroom, the gymnasium, the department chair's and dean's office, and for becoming involved in constructing our society for the future. By emphasizing the socially constructed nature of, and hence the need to make problematic what is taken for granted, the possibility for alternatives in the wider society will be opened up.

摘要:
This paper discusses critical and cultural studies approaches to popular media analysis. The concept of ideal subject position is presented as a useful tool for the analysis of media texts. Applying this concept to a case study ofSports Illustratedsupports the argument thatSports Illustratedtexts beckon consumers who are white, Western, affluent, Christian, heterosexual men. The political implications of this analysis are discussed.

摘要:
This paper addresses the fundamental question: What price is society prepared to pay for the fictional fabrication of the cultural hero-system of sport? Based on a critical analysis of selected literary works by John Updike, Irwin Shaw, and Jason Miller, this paper argues that the existential crises from which character emerges in these accounts reveal the cultural hero-system of sport to be regressive. In particular, this paper argues that sport offers a world of social, moral, and emotional simplicity, a world focused on the themes of youth, and that as a cultural hero-system sport can, at worst, infantilize those who seek to derive sense and meaning from it.

摘要:
This essay engages in a reflexive analysis of how to say something“officially recognized as intellectual”about some person who is emotively sensational. This essay has two parts: (a) a position statement on herolines that invites engagement in a process of rediscovery and reconsideration how the privileged, intellectual class can write biographies that, in C. Wright Mills' terms, truly integrates the subject's biography with the historical and socially constructed essence of his or herbeing; and (b) an inquiry into whether celebrated individuals are truly worthy of respect and in what ways he or she may be reactionary, reformative (playing by the rules of liberal democracy with some changes in mind), or revolutionary.

摘要:
This essay argues for a rethinking of feminist analyses of sport and explores the possibilities that exist for developing different ways of thinking, acting, and being as feminist sport sociologists. Beginning with an examination and critique of feminists attempts to develop theories in which white, middleclass women's experiences are falsely universalized as representative of all women's experiences, this essay argues for giving up theories that assume the existence of a generic woman and for developing work that reflects the diversity of all women's lives; an example of this is found in the ways identities and standpoints influence academic feminist work. An analysis of heterosexism in sport helps suggest ways of developing analyses that can help to challenge and change the multiple forms of oppression in sport.

摘要:
This paper discusses how physical educators contribute to social injustice and inequality through the hidden curriculum. Often, physical educators perceive their roles as independent from the broader social context. As such, they rarely analyze the sociocultural implications of teaching. This paper examines particular hidden social concepts, patterns, and characteristics that often are taught in physical education. These concepts, patterns, and characteristics reinforce the prevalent hegemonic ideology which, in turn, serves the interests of the dominant groups at the expense of the dominated. The intention of this paper is to raise awareness about how the hidden curriculum in physical education affects students' and teachers' lives. Ultimately, the aim is to open windows of transformation and possibility in an attempt to create a more just and equal society through physical education.

摘要:
The primary purpose of this essay is to address the linkage between the emergence and development of cultural studies on the one hand, and the study of sport as a cultural practice on the other. Specifically, this linkage is examined in a fourfold manner: first, an overview of the implicit political commitments associated with cultural studies as a critical intellectual pursuit; second, a genealogy of an overlooked dimension of cultural studies, namely, the sport-related analyses conducted by researchers affiliated with the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Study at the University of Birmingham; third, an examination of the methodological and theoretical underpinnings of Stuart Hall's (1986a)“Marxism without guarantees”as an innovative and incisive response to the cultural studies problematic; and fourth, a discussion of the relevance of Hall's conjunctural approach for critically interpreting the significance of sport in the production and experiencing of contemporary national cultures.

摘要:
A great deal of information about the doping practices of the former East German sports establishment has appeared since the collapse of the German Democratic Republic during the period 1989–1990. Long-standing suspicions about the hormonal manipulation of East German athletes have been amply confirmed. As important as they are, these revelations should not obscure important similarities between the high-performance sport cultures of West Germany and the former East German state. These common features include government funding of elite athletes and scientific research as well as a willingness to tolerate the use of illicit drugs by athletes. Both systems accepted and concealed the use of anabolic steroids by the athletes. The absorption by the West German sports establishment of many former East German sports physicians and trainers once involved in doping illustrates a shared mentality that views doping as an inevitable part of high-performance sport.
