AbstractAnalyses of freshly expressed apple juices for a number of chemical constituents are presented. The analyses extended over a period of five consecutive seasons and the effect of source of the fruit, variety, etc., is indicated. The wide range of figures for any one constituent is so large that the use of chemical analyses to check the juice content of various liquid apple products is shown to be impracticable. AbstractOur previous figures (Campbell&Mitchell, 1950) for the optical activity of natural (+)‐trans‐chrysanthemic acid have been questioned by Harper, Reed&Thompson (1951). Examination of another specimen of the natural acid has given much higher figures than those recorded by Harper et al. (1951) and by Campbell&Harper (1945), though slightly lower than those previously reported by us. It is now suggested that the acid component of pyrethrin I and cinerin I may be racemized to a slight and variable extent in the plant during metabolism or after collection. It is shown that the acid is not racemized by the conditions of hydrolysis through which we prepared it. It seems unlikely that Campbell&Harper's synthetic (—)‐trans‐acid was optically pure; it is possible that the natural (+)‐trans‐acid has yet to be isolated in an optica

AbstractWaxoline purple AS has been established as an efficient colorimetric reagent for the determination of boron in 84% sulphuric acid. Data are presented showing the loss of boron during the orthodox ashing techniques of both plant residues and soil extracts. Conditions of ignition have been established whereby it is possible to check the relative boron status of any crop or soil when compared against standards from the same crop or similar soil type known to have a satisfactory boron status.

AbstractVarious species of plants have been sampled at different stages of first and second growth from field crops and from special plots; the proteins have been extracted and hydrolysed and the amino‐acids separated by two‐dimensional chromatography on paper. Fourteen amino‐acids have been determined colorimetrically and the proportions of the acids have been found to be affected by such factors as stage of growth, season, nitrogenous fertilizers and species. AbstractSacked decorticated groundnuts stored in open‐air commercial stacks at Kano, N. Nigeria, were sprayed with aqueous suspensions of BHC and DDT at dosages more than twice those used in practice. Six months later surface bags were removed and oil was pressed from the nuts in a local mill. The amount of insecticide retained by the oil and by the cake was determined. 摘要:
AbstractIn an experiment lasting three weeks, cocoa beans were stored and carried to port in Southern Nigeria in sacks which were impregnated with DDT and BHC. In this period the amount of impregnated DDT fell from 3.45% to 2.8% and that of BHC from 1.65% to 0.93%. The amount absorbed by the cocoa was within the limits allowed in the U.K. Most of the absorbed insecticide was retained by the testa. Similar results were obtained when cocoa beans were stored in contact with floors and walls treated with heavy dosages of these insecticides.
