AbstractA method has been developed for the detection of coliform organisms in foodstuffs which is an alternative to the standard MacConkey test. A relationship has been established between the number of organisms originally present and the time required for their detection. The new method makes use of radioactive tracers and requires less time to confirm the presence of coliform contamination.

AbstractSoils of four different types were treated with a relatively high dosage level (15 ppm) of14C‐chlorfenvinphos and were stored at about 22° for four months. After this time the following radio‐labelled compounds were detected in the moist soils: unchanged chlorfenvinphos, 1.0‐4.7 ppm; 1‐(2′4′‐dichlorophenyl)ethan‐1‐ol, 0.06‐1.0 ppm; 2,4‐dichloroacetophenone, 0.1‐0.5 ppm; desethyl chlorfenvinphos, 0.1‐0.2 ppm; (2′,4′‐dichlorophenyl)ethan‐1,2‐diol,<0.03 ppm; salts or conjugates of desethyl chlorfenvinphos, 0.05‐0.6 ppm; 2,4‐dichlorophenyloxirane,<0.005 ppm; 2,4‐dichlorophenacyl chloride,<0.005 ppm.Soils were also treated with 3‐4 lb/ac14C‐chlorfenvinphos and cabbages, onions, and carrots were grown to maturity in the soils. The edible part of cabbages at harvest contained no detectable chlorfenvinphos or breakdown products of it when the limit of detectability was about 0.005 ppm. At harvest at 8‐10 weeks after soil application of chlorfenvinphos the edible roots of carrots contained 0.12 ppm of unchanged chlorfenvinphos, and onion bulbs contained 0.07 ppm. AbstractTwelve cationic surface‐active agents, quaternary ammonium and pyridinium salts, of widely different wetting ability were tested as eradicant fungicides againstErysiphe graminison oats, at both equal wetting power and equal concentration. At equal wetting power there were wide differences in fungitoxicity but, in general, the compounds with the greatest wetting ability were the most effective fungicides. AbstractA study of the growth of oats in peat of very low copper content has been made. It was found that various nutrient amendments improved growth but the effect of copper was overriding. There was some evidence for copper unavailability due to fixation by organic matter, but it appears that the known interactions between major and minor elements largely determined the appearance and severity of copper deficiency.

AbstractThepsoas majorandsemitendinosusmuscles from ten Hereford Shorthorn steers were analysed. Five of the steers had been severely restricted in their diet during an Irish winter period (temperature range 3–13°) of 20 weeks. The remaining five were used as controls and were adequately fed throughout their lives. After the restriction period the five diet‐restricted animals were adequately fed for 22 weeks. All ten steers were then slaughtered at the age of 20 months.Within each type of muscle there were no significant differences between treatments in the components, moisture, intramuscular fat, total protein, ash, intramuscular collagen, hexosamine hydrochloride, or in Warner Bratzler shear values. The correlations between intramuscular fat and shear values, and between hexosamine hydrochloride and shear values were low and not significant. Collagen contents correlated significantly with shear values at the 10% level of significance.There was no evidence that variation in tenderness (as measured by shear values) could be attributed to the pre‐slaughter treatment or that any deterioration in meat quality was caused by this tre

AbstractDimeric 3‐methylcyclopentadienone was obtained by dehydrobromination of 4‐bromo‐3‐methylcyclo‐pentenone and by hydrolysis of 4‐hydroxy‐3‐methylcyclopentenone formate. Four structures for the dimer were possible. Synthesis and spectroscopic evidence showed that the dimer obtained was formed by addition to the unsubstituted double bond, with the methyl group on the norbornene ring in the position more remote from the carbonyl group of the cyclopentenone. Decarbonmonoxylation of the dimer gave 3,5‐dimethylindanone, synthesised for comparison by another route.Contrary to an earlier report, pyrolysis of 9,10‐dihydro‐9,10(4,5‐3‐methylcyclopent‐2‐enono)anthracene (obtained by alkaline cyclisation of the adduct of anthracene and diacetyl ethylene) gave mainly 3,5‐dimethylindanone and not 3‐methylcyclopentadienone.Rethrins with no side chain in the alcoholic part of the molecule were synthesised from 4‐bromo‐3‐methylcyclopent‐2‐enone. AbstractThe effect of potassium concentration in the nutrient medium on growth and mineral composition (N, K, P, Ca, Mg, Na) of red beet, cabbage, lettuce and Italian ryegrass in sand culture was investigated. It was shown that the results and those of some earlier workers can be interpreted as a simple linear relationship by means of the equation: whereyis plant weight or leaf potassium content,xis potassium concentration in the nutrient medium and a, b and x0are constants. Sand‐grown plants contained relatively high concentrations of sodium, which played an important part in the maintenance of cation balance under these conditions. In red beet, cabbage and ryegrass, changes in potassium content were almost completely balanced by corresponding changes in sodium content with relative constancy of calcium and magnesium, whereas in lettuce, calcium and magnesium also functioned in maintaining the balanc
