AbstractA preliminary investigation has shown that methyl isothiocyanate is the principal product of decomposition of sodium N‐methyldithiocarbamate (metham‐sodium) when applied to soil. AbstractWhen unyeasted wheat flour doughs were incubated for 14 h. at 303°, the dialysable nitrogen level rose from 19.4 to 35.7 mg./100 g. of flour. Concurrent increases in amino‐peptide and ammonia nitrogen were also observed. The addition of antibiotics to yeastless doughs markedly changed the pattern of the distribution of non‐protein‐nitrogen on incubation. AbstractThe autolysis of proteins in leaf extracts and the proteolytic activity of crude preparations from such extracts against casein, as added substrate, was studied. If the proteins are not precipitated soon after preparation of extracts, they autolyse, and the loss from autolysis is directly related to the temperature and to the interval between preparing the extract and precipitating proteins. The advantages of the use of the NPN‐increment over other methods as ail index of protein hydrolysis are discussed. This method was used to study the proteolytic activity of leaf extracts from eleven plant species with no latex. Leaf proteases from these plants form a homogeneous group with low activity per g. of protein‐N, and evidence is given suggesting that they belong to the SH‐group of enzymes with optimum pH between 5.2 and 5.7. AbstractA study was made of the efficiency for chicks of different types of vitamin‐A concentrates. The influence of two different levels of protein (17 and 26%) and of two kinds of fat supplements (soya‐bean oil and acidulated soya‐bean oil soapstock) on storage of vitamin in the liver was also studied. Vitamin‐A utilisation, as judged by liver storage and survival, is best when the vitamin is given as a gelatin‐coated preparation. Utilisation of the vitamin is not influenced by variation of the dietary protein level within the range likely to encountered in practical management. Supplementation of the diet with the above mentioned fats seemed to improve the utilisation of the vitamin, but this effect may have been caused by the tocopherol content of

AbstractA number of Streptomyces strains producing streptothricin‐like antibiotics have been examined, and their products compared with known members of this group. Circular paper chromatography has indicated that these antibiotics are mixtures of up to six components with high antibacterial and antifungal activity. Components separated by column chromatography and tested against powdery mildews on plants showed eradicant and protective action. Very high antimildew activity was found in a major component D and also in component F which corresponded to streptothricin.
